Night time reading: Can you do it? Do you do it?

I ask this as I tend to be a night owl during the summers that I have off. As of now, I like to begin reading at 11:00 p.m. or midnight and continue for about an hour and a half. Anyone like the night time for reading? :)

I also read in bed before going to sleep. It's often the most quiet time in our house. I can't actually go to sleep now without a book in my hand!

I'm up reading until 1:00am (ish) most nights, not necessarily in bed though. I have to be up quite early in order to get to work for 9:00am but I don't have any trouble if I've been up reading the night before.

I find nighttime to be the best time for me to read, though I tend to keep it up until about 6 a.m. and then be a wreck in the morning, or, if I have half the opportunity, to just sleep through the day (vampire).

Interesting comments by all, a few things that came to my mind from reading each response.

When I was a sophomore in college, I discovered a new coffeehouse that was constructed. It was summer time and having nothing to do(there was always a two week split between the end of the spring semester and start of the summer semester) I would head on over and read books while having coffee. Granted, I would consume six lattes in a five-six hour span of time. I would then head home and would be so wired that I would read until the sun came up again. I pulled three all-nighters before my body got into the rhythm of incorporating caffeine. Once it adjusted, I was fine, but it made for a heck of al ot of energized reading.

I do something kind of like this at the present time. My day starts at 8:00 a.m., but I live far enough away that I have to start driving to work at 7:00 a.m., which puts my time to be awake at 5:30 a.m. or 6:00 a.m. if I prepare some things the night before. I love to read at most, to midnight as if I go any longer, I'll pay for it the next day in being tired.

I have a great recliner that I rest and read in before bed, I don't like to take the book with me as they always see if you want good sleep, get rid of distractions.

I work the night shift and often read in bed before going to sleep.

I use to work the nightshift in college from 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. and I loved every hour of it. Teaching isn't a night job, but if I were to ever work any other type of job, I would like one that would require overnight hours. There's just something about it.

I can't imagine NOT reading at night. My husband and I like to read together before going to bed. Often its the only reading time he has all day. And lots of times I can't sleep, so I'll get up and read til I get good and sleepy or finish the book, whichever comes first.

I have a bit of an insomnia problem, and since unfortunately I have nothing better to do, I tend to read til about 4am.

You must be a lot younger than me...2 am is my outer limit:D

During my regular days, I can't sleep unless I read something at night in bed. I feel the night reading completes my day and indicates that the day is over, even if I only read a couple of pages but in many situations it's a must.

That's very nice. The couples reading before heading to sleep. I bet you discuss a lot the books you read and reach disagreements ;) ...

Sometimes I can get reading done in the afternoon, just depends on the distractions. But the main reading is at night. But 3 a.m. is about my limit, fortunately I have a comfortable chair and ottoman that serves. And yes, more than once I've fallen asleep right there. :)

I always read before I go to sleep - I find it very hard to fall asleep if I don't. I'm not much of a night person though - I usually stop reading at about 10:30 on weeknights and 11:30-12 on weekends.

I read at night if I'm not too tired already and I have an interesting book to read. However, not usually for very long. Reading often puts me to sleep if I'm at all tired

Night time has been one of my main reading times for a while and I can't imagine going to bed more than 2 nights in a row without reading (unless I'm very ill). The latest I've stayed up reading before would be about 3am. On a usual school night I only stay up reading til about 12 or 1am, perhaps 2 or 3am some school nights a few years back. I know I shouldn't, but I tend to find myself more awake at night than in the day.

It's my best time....at times I'll be so engrossed in what I'm reading, that it's way way WAY past my bedtime:(

I have to read in bed every night before I go to sleep. Some nights I last only a page or so, but for the most part if I can find a comfy position, I generally read from around 10:00 until 11:00. It's usually closer to 11:30 or midnight on a weekend. If I'm near the end of a book, I'll push it and stay up longer, even if it's a work night.

Whenever I go hyperthyroid and have stretches of the most horrid insomnia, books get me through. If I'm not asleep within an hour, reading for a long while might get me to be able to drift off for at least a couple of hours. It's better than nothing. And it's way better than just tossing, turning, and counting those silly proverbial sheep.
