Are Oasis the best band of the last 30 years

Nirvana has still made a much bigger impact on popular music than Oasis will ever do. Picking the best band of the last 30 years is always somewhat subjective but Oasis would not even reach my top 10 list if i bothered to write one.
 
The first time i saw noel gallagher on TV,i though it was a piss-taking program about rock band(honest)and then ....

Is there any way to know this for sure? Couldn't those songs just as easily motivate or spur empathy in others?
 
Plus, if we're going to grade music on how healthy it is for teenagers (which is a ridiculous idea IMO) I'm not sure that all of Oasis' lyrics are all that positive either... What's "Champagne Supernova" about, anyway? ;)

Joy Division my best British band. A band whose music helped mould a cultural revolution across the North of England in the late 70s.

Ironic that they were planning a US tour shortly before their short career was ended abrubtly.

Ironic also the parallel with Nirvana who also lost their lead singer prematurely.

The parallel between Kurt and Hendrix is ironic. Both were from Seatle, both were big drug users, and both died at 27. Quiet possibly the same way.

Are talking about Definitely Maybe's songs. If this is the case reading the songs lyrics will help you answer that.

They only had two studio albums. And in any case Oasis' first two albums are much better imo. Q magazine readers will back me up here.

I disagree here. I can't even name one band that is still making music today except Marcy Playground. Oasis on the otherhand have influenced many English bands, i.e. Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys and The Killers and Jet. But you Americans probably don't even know who they are, except for The Killers of course.

And why are Nirvana even being brought into this thread. They only made two good albums, can anybody honestly say they would give a shit about Nirvana if they were still making music of course not. The only reason that people know Kurt is because he blew his brains out. If Noel did that after Be Here Now was released he would have gone down in history as a great. Mind you he still is.

You do realise that Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, and Jet are pretty dire? I'll admit to tapping my foot to the first Arctic Monkeys album, but that's where the appreciation ends.

If the best example of band producing music over a long period of time is Marcy Playground (have they had anything close to a decent hit since Sex And Candy?) then your musical knowledge is sorely lacking a number of bands that have been going for ages. Here's some:
  • The Cure
  • New Order
  • Depeche Mode
And, in terms of more important bands from the last 30 years, here's some more:
  • Joy Division (okay, so they are New Order now)
  • The Smiths
  • Primal Scream
  • Radiohead
  • Sonic Youth
  • Pavement
Compared to these, Oasis are pub tribute band to the likes of Slade and the Beatles.

And why are Nirvana even being brought into this thread. They only made two good albums, can anybody honestly say they would give a shit about Nirvana if they were still making music of course not.

More likely that his lyrics made a connection with people. Many were fans before he took his life. Many still are. And the lyrics still speak to people growing up.

If Noel did that after Be Here Now was released he would have gone down in history as a great.quote]
He's a glorified Inspiral Carpets roadie. But I'm sure there would have been balloons.

So what, two studio albums are more than enough to make an impact. I still listen to Joy Division, but cant really be arsed with Oasis.

No because Nirvana made a huge impact especially with their second album. And Kurt was still alive and well when this happened.
 
BTW, I'm counting three Nirvana studio albums... Bleach, Nevermind and In Utero? (As opposed to two good Oasis albums... though that's apples and oranges.)

And like Zolipara says, one or two records can be quite enough to make an impact. Most artists aren't worth following religiously after their third album, and a lot of great bands made remarkably few albums.

I left out Bleach because I never did thing it was much cop. About A Girl was great, but much more enjoyable on the MTV...Unplugged in New York release.

And like Zolipara says, one or two records can be quite enough to make an impact.

  • Odessey And Oracle, The Zombies
  • Never Mind The Bollocks..., The Sex Pistols

What a great discussion you have started! Debating tastes once again, I love it!

I am not talking about any particular album or song. Reading the lyrics is not going to tell me anything other than what the song says, period. Going from that to saying they have a "negative impact" is a leap of faith to say the least.

Yah, I guess so. This is a good example of how what appears impactful in one place is less so elsewhere. Then again why not? It's just a little tough to measure "impact" though.
