Luck in the Shadows - Lynn Flewelling.
First in the nightrunner series.
Thieves, spies, war, magic. A good series and good book to start it off with, BUT the homosexual relationship of the 2 main characters left me without a frame of reference, and detracted from my enjoyment of what would...
A great series, I've devoured each book with glee. Killing off main characters was a shock at first but this adds to the journey of discovery when reading the series,so fresh, a rare gem infact.
Added to the intrigues between the 2 families, plus the internal struggles that abound, you have...
Jirel of Joiry - Catherine Lucille Moore
J's are hard, have not read this book but it's the sort of stuff I pick up in second hand book shops and read on the rig when bored. Pulp fantasy, simple literary fun, eg I am browsing through Conan the Renegade now. As long as you take books like...
It's a long post but wade through it if you want to scratch the surface of where this book is coming from.
I have not read the book BUT,,,,,,,,,
I did some research into it as a friend finished it and we were discussing the validity of Brown's premises.
A few of the topics

:D
Yep it was the maghooks in the end that got me.
When I read it I thought NO insert expletive WAY. The rest I could take as fantasy action, but that maghook scene. *cough* nah!
I've read
Contest (1996)
Ice Station (1998)
Temple (1999)
Area 7 (2001)
OK for a fast read but Area 7 pissed me off so much I doubt I'll read scarecrow. Unless I find it some where and I am desparate for something to read.
All Rielly does is create a situation with a fantastical (is...
House Atriedes - Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.
First of 3 Prelude to Dune series
Set before 'Dune', this prequel details the Leto Atriedes rises to power and his struggles with House Harkonan and Corrino. A very good book which tells us where the main characters from Dune came...
Just finished this 30 minutes ago.
General comment about me. I purely read for relaxtion and to pass the time at work when it's slack:) . Things I look for in a book are a fast pace and believable characters within the context of the novel. I mainly read scifi, fantasy and thrillers...
Why not write a brief comment about the book, theme, good / bad etc. 1 or 2 sentances only.
The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams .
Pretty much standard fantasy. Good vs Evil. A mad king. A princess, magic, a young kitchen boy (read future hero) that goes on a journey of self discovery as...
couldn't agree more, i've had to re-read the series prior to the last book because I couldn't remeber what had happened.
I guess he needs some extra cash?
Steven Erikson, excellent
Robin Hobb, not bad
George Martin, excellent
China Miéville, too wierd for me
Terry Pratchett read a loy of his stuff when I was younger and really enjoyed it. Might pick up a copy again of his later books.
Ursula (K) le Guin. Earthsea was great
Elizabeth Moon...
I am sorry to hear this.
As I said getting into it is a hard slog but you've done the hard work. Don't give up.
Official Dune site Looks like 2 new books in the series.
You might say money grabbing, but the more Dune the better IMO :D
