J.K. Rowling set to write "crime" novel

It's probably just me who isn't. I'm a pretty crappy English teacher to be fair. Mind you, the kids seem to like me so I'm not doing too badly.

    Insomnia

Thank you, I've tried pretty much everything and I'm sure it's mainly down to anxiety and stress. I have to be careful with any kind of medication as I have high blood pressure. Probably also stress related. I'm due to get some meds for that soon (when I can get my car back from the car...

J.K. Rowling set to write "crime" novel

To be fair, I think the law applies to all teachers of English on holiday. During school time all we get is "How come you don't know what that word means/how to spell that, you're supposed to be an English teacher". During the holidays we rebel and make up stuff. My own kids have an...

J.K. Rowling set to write "crime" novel

I thought this forum was about enjoying books. Defining them as literature or not seems pointless. It becomes book snobbery and that is useless. We all enjoy books, some are classed as literature, some are not, why try to define them in any way? You either like a book or you don't. And...

J.K. Rowling set to write "crime" novel

The point being, what does she care now? She's made her money, she now has time to have some fun and use her name to get whatever she wants published. I'd love that kind of opportunity. And having seen her books turn lots and lots of kids onto reading, I cannot give her anything but...

    Thomas Harris

I hated Hannibal Rising. Loved all of the other books up to then. My other half Knows Tom Noonan who played Frances Dolarhyde in Manhunter. Nice bloke apparently. Excellent film, but the Ralph Fiennes version I think was closer to the book.

J.K. Rowling set to write "crime" novel

Well she's made more than I have out of writing so I'd be reading it without any pre-conceived ideas. I'm guessing she's made more than you have too.

    Bumper stickers

I have "I have have good brakes, do you have good insurance?" in my rear window. It's because I wanted one that said "Back the **** off" but couldn't put it in there as I work in a school and it would be inappropriate.

    Jodi Picoult

I have some of her books but haven't enjoyed them. Not my cup of tea really.

Odd things that happen to you

My life gets odder. It's 3.30 am, I can't sleep, and I've just had a phone call! Told the guy it was a wrong number and he's not rung back. Was a reverse charge call, I answered because two of my kids are away this weekend and you never know what they might get up to, but this guy was...

    Your Pets

My bunch: Pedro, my Macaw, and my baby... My favourite cat, Mooms: The kittens: The scariest dog in the world - NOT We have lots of other pets, including dogs, lots more cats, chinchillas, a snake and the hamster, but these pictures represent the real hardcore of...

    Insomnia

I just can't sleep. I can nod off on the sofa for a few hours after a drinking session. But I can't just go to bed and go to sleep. (sober or not) It's driving me insane. I've had sleeping tablets and all kinds of stuff but nothing seems to work. I don't want to end up spending my life...

Do you think shes cheating on me?

Doesn't sound too good. How old are you both, how long have you been together? If the relationship is fairly new, I'd be tempted, if I were you, to move on. If you've been together for years you need to sit down and have an honest chat about things. Why? Because whatever is going on...

    One cat I don't want near me....ever

I have a cat that looks just like Oscar, although my boy is a bit more furry. He's not psychic unless you count his sudden appearance every time the barbecus is lit.

Mary Roach: Stiff: The Curious Life of Human Cadavers

Not read Stiff but I guess if you like that kind of thing you should check out Death's Acre by Bill Bass and Jon Jefferson. It's about the almost legendary body farm.

Best Book You Have Ever Read

Stll always, The Long Walk by Richard Bachmann. If you're into non-fiction, "Happy Like Murderers" byGordon Burn is an excellent overview of the West murders. Even better is "Out of the Shadows" by Anne Marie West. However this is out of print and current prices for second hand paper back...

    Any recomendations for psychological thrillers?

Messiah is superb. I read that a couple of weeks ago. Tami Hoag is an good thriller author too. I've also just read The Death List by Paul Johnston. It's excellent, was one I coudn't put down until I'd finished it. I've probably done permanant damage to my bladder.

What Kind of Watch Do You Wear? (contains images)

I have one of these. It was bloody expensive (£495) but I've had it for years and love it. And it was a present so I didn't suffer the cost. :)

    Weirdest book

The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks. Seriously weird, but surprisingly stunning too.

How And Where Do You Read?

At the moment, outside, on a sun lounger in the garden, or on a char in the summerhouse. Indoors on my reading chair, which is a huge comfortable armchair, situated next to one of my bookcases, near to the fireplace. I can't read in bed at all, but I do sometimes read magazines in the bath.
