    Christian Fantasy and Science Fiction

Another fairly new author is Brandon Mull, he is writing the Fablehaven series. Book 3 just came out, I have only read books 1 and 2, but I enjoyed them. There isn't much Christian symbolism, but they are very clean, yet fun and exciting. Though it is certainly not in the genre of fantasy...

Stephenie Meyer: Twilight & New Moon

I can see how the books could be viewed as misogynistic. Bella is so dependent upon Edward and Jacob, it's like she's helpless. I also think too much of her self worth is derived from men, Edward in particular. On a side note, I have decided that if I was Charlie, I would circle Bella...

Jim Dale did a bloody brilliant job.

    Lord Of The Rings dilemma

Read it, and enjoy it. I love the feel of "Fellowship of the Ring". If you had a hard time with Fellowship, it may not be worth your time to continue as the rest is fairly similar. I would try it again though..... Good read.

    Why does contemporary poetry suck?

Having grown up on a farm, I disagree. The farm life is hard, but the labor is mostly physical, leaving the mind somewhat free to roam. There is a saying where I grew up, "Farmers have an opinion on everything." The thought behind this is that farmers are able to form complex opinions while...

    Why does contemporary poetry suck?

I have thought about this too; here are some ideas I have had: 1. The poetry that has survived through generations was the cream of the crop of its generation. Chances are that much of what has been written and published through the ages wasn't all that great, but only the good ones keep...

Looking for a new series to read

Wheel of Time books 7-10 the plot barely moves along at all. Book after book I felt like I was reading hundred of pages of the same thing. Book 11 finally sees the plot advance. If you can plow through book 10, then book 11 will reward you, plus you get to see what happens when Lews Therin...

Is this horrifying or absolutely beautiful?

It's horrifying. I'm all for helping people, but our government is spending our country into oblivion. We have a national debt of 9 trillion dollars. If you include current obligations like SS payments etc, we are an astounding 56 trillion dollars in debt, That is about $186,000 per man...

Stephenie Meyer: Twilight & New Moon

Finished Book 3 Eclipse today. I liked this book the best. Edward shows genuine decency and I can see why Bella, and the Mrs like him. I am just a little disappointed in the development of the characters of Bella and Jacob. It seems hugely incongruent that Bella would be so eager to give up...

Im looking for a book for my brother-HELP

As a former 14 yr old boy, I can tell you that it can be tough. I was 19 or 20 when I first became interested in reading. Here are some books that actually got me to read when I was 14, and some that would have... My Side of the Mountain, if he likes this book, he'll like Hatchet The...

    Stephenie Meyer: Breaking Dawn

I haven't started Breaking Dawn, I'm halfway through Eclipse, but that video is seriously disturbing. From the perspective of a husband who never reads romance trying to relate more to his wife.... I just can't care as much about these characters as that lady obviously does. I like the books...

Which Was the Last Book You Read in One Sitting?

The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas, just couldn't put it down. I reckon that isn't actually the last, but it stands out because I started it at night, finished at 6:30AM....that was a long day at work:lol: I got on a Louis L'amour kick a few years back, most of his books are one sit reads...

    Are The Rumors True?

According to Snopes, there is a letter from Capote denying that he had any part in it. There appears to be some evidence that the character Dill is based on a young Capote.

    Are The Rumors True?

I've always thought that was odd, to crank out characters like that and then just drop writing. I haven't written anything so good, and I can't stop popping out ideas, and characters, even if I don't finish it all.

    Book recommendations for a preteen?

My kids and I loved Fablehaven, my wife loves Leven Thumps, (I'm not as big on it as Fablehaven). Might I suggest some of my kids favorites, I have a 12 yr old, so interests may be similar. Harry Potter, of course, The Hobbit, Midnight for Charlie Bone, My side of the Mountain, Hatchet. I...

    Fyodor Dostoevsky

Good, I didn't want to spoil anything.... One thing that hit me when I read Brothers K, was that Alyosha could have been Dmitri or Ivan. He really could have, any of us could. There is a scene where Dmitri is trying to describe how he is overcome by passion, jealousy or anger, and he tells...
