The Dark One in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series is pretty evil. And all of his servants (creepy creatures, the Forsaken, etc) are scary. When the main characters have to fight the evil servants I find myself squinting my eyes as if I could hide from the fight! :p Sometimes I have to...
My science fiction/fantasy favs are:
Ray Bradbury
Patricia McKillip
Ursula K. Le Guin
Meredith Ann Pierce
Garth Nix
Robert Jordan (at least the first 5)
I read some Arthur C. Clarke but he was too technical. I tend toward science fantasy more than science fiction. I've...
I finished The Pleasure of My Company. It was good but Shop Girl was better. These books are more like short stories to me. I would recommend TPofMC just because it is short and sweet. It is nice to finish a book in a few days sometimes. The story built up nicely but the ending was a little...
I really should keep a list of books I've read. Once I re-read a book I had previously read (I'd forgotten that I'd read it) and I didn't realize it until I got to a specific part in the book that sounded very familiar. After that the rest of the book came back to me. It was a very deja vu...
I have read Shop Girl and I am now reading his latest book "The Pleasure of My Company". It is good so far. I liked Shop Girl a lot too. My only complaint is that the books are very short, they are called novellas. I know that he is trying to be brief, that's probably a comedy thing, but I...
I just finished Memoirs of a Geisha and decided to try something safer. :)
I was in the middle of re-reading the Arthurian saga by Mary Stewart when I picked up Geisha. I wanted something to slow me down. I am now on The Last Enchantment. I read these books so long ago that they are...
I've read both. They are pretty different books. Rebecca is a good DuMaurier book, but my fav is Frenchman's Creek. Every word in Frenchman's Creek is necessary and perfect. Rebecca is a bit more ponderous (unneccesary stuff). And Maxim is such a whiner (sorry Maxim lovers). I hate the...
I read it several years ago also. Parts of it float up from my subconcious sometimes when I least expect them. I photocopied some pages of it and hung them on my wall when I was in college. I loved all the imagery. It did make me feel naseous sometimes though. :)
Yeah, that's what I thought too. The beginning built everything up so high, and then the last chapter just zoomed by. Three quarters of the book was the first 30 years of her life and then the last quarter was the rest. It was very uneven. I guess it is that way because she spent her life...
Is there a way you can choose to view a spoiler? Or is it always a big black box in the middle of a post? How do you start a thread so you can talk about parts in a book without fear that they will be blacked out? I am a bit confused.
Thanks everyone! I wasn't sure what kind of people posted here (some message boards aren't very friendly) but now I am reassured. I am so glad I can talk about books with people now! And to find others that read. I can't understand why people don't read more. Its the best hobby to have...
Ok
I am starting to see it now. I think you are right Lyra, if she accepts Nobu, she can never have the Chairman. I have read a little more and things are clearer. I am sorry if this thread is spoiling the book for you Fluffy! I don't understand the "spoiler" rules here yet (i'm new). I...
Hi everyone! I haven't quite finished this book (about 50 pgs to go) but I am dying to discuss it. Why is Sayuri so afraid to have Nobu as her danna? She keeps saying that he is probably her destiny but at the same time still holds out hope for the Chairman. I don't understand it. Does she...
Hello all! I have always wanted to discuss books with people but I never thought to try the internet. I just found this site yesterday and am excited to try it out. The main reason I decided to join is because I am currently reading "Memoirs of a Geisha" and wanted to ask a few questions...
