    TBF: Moderation Issues

I toadally accept your points knovella - perhaps except for the banning one where only 5 users have been banned in the last year, two of whom were the same person. It's generally the case that those causing unrest get bored and leave of their own accord before banning is necessary. As I said...

    TBF: Moderation Issues

Here are a couple of points to discuss which may or may not help TBF: * Make all posts viewable - many threads disappear from view after a while but still show up in searches, etc. By having them on view all the time, it gives more stuff for people to read and provides oppotunities for new...

    TBF: Moderation Issues

Also, people are asking a question: "What's going wrong?" and I am just giving them the answer. I would have thought it would be an answer most people would like to hear, because it doesn't really blame anybody. Certainly not the mods, who, as I have said, have been placed in an unenviable...

    TBF: Moderation Issues

No underhand motives at all. I think all those who would cross the rubicon, as it were, already have done. I'm offering genuine advice and support to people who are worried about things. Others obviously agree. And I am still a member of this site, as so have as much right to a view as anyone...

    TBF: Moderation Issues

Palimpsest isn't tightly controlled either - we have a wider remit of discussion topics over there than here. The one thing that isn't tolerated is spamming and idiocy. Something that a lot of people complain about here, as well. But while you like the openess here, a lot of people are worried...

    TBF: Moderation Issues

Well, quite. I actually fully agree with you - it isn't for everyone. But that is what makes it work for those who do stick around. There is a culture over there that the majority like and stick to, which gives the site a clear direction. Almost everyone knows what they can expect and what is...

    TBF: Moderation Issues

Thank you Moto. Exactly what I meant, earlier, put much more succinctly. We may have had our run ins over in greener pastures, but you're right on this one. And at least over there you know exactly who's in charge...

    TBF: Moderation Issues

Not at all - things are going very nicely over there, largely because it's run properly. I was actually dragged back over to these parts because of the ill treatment of a good friend of mine. This thread amused me because, once again, despite the users of this forum pleading for something to be...

    TBF: Moderation Issues

Oh, no, it doesn't have to be like that at all. If the mod has a genuine interest in the stuff being discussed, and it is an interesting conversation starter, then it's just fine. Honestly - I do this all the time on the forum I help to run, and I don't think anyone notices that it is going on.

    TBF: Moderation Issues

That's not really what I meant, Shelfy. Of course others should come up with new posts and new ideas. But when they don't and when things stall, then those running the forum have a responsibility to pitch in with stuff to keep the momentum up.

    TBF: Moderation Issues

The thing is, you shouldn't have to. It's a sign of laziness on the part of those that run the forum that it's down to the users to do everything. If things slow down a bit, it should be theose in charge that come up with some interesting titbits to get things moving again. It's part of the...

    Your favorite blogs

I read hundreds of blogs and so a good RSS aggregator is vital - I use Feed Demon and Newsgator. One good book blog is the Guardian's Culture Vulture one - though it has a crud title. One other excellent blog that is also "literature" related is the caustic yet amusing Crap Authors...

RE: Some guy on eBay is selling 500 words of his book to budding authors

It looks like Palimpsest is running its very own version of this, called The Palimpian Pen. Those crazy guys! Still, it looks like a good way to get published for free - they don't charge like that charlatan Peter Johnson!

    The Simpsons

I think Chief Wiggum is great, and he provides one of my favourite lines, delivered in response to some rampaging rhinos: "Can nobody stop the thunder lizards?"

contructive criticism wanted - critique me

Some of the stuff that gets posted up there is truly awful. Should those producing this stuff be put out of their misery or given more false hope?
