It's called Alf Layla w'Layla in Arabic which means "1000 Nights, and a Night". In Farsi, it's called Hezar Afsan v'Afsaneh which means "1000 Legends, and a Legend".
The poetry in the Arabic book rhymes, but I think they can translate it with rhyme like how Fitzgerald translated Khayyam's...
Actually, the "Arabian Nights" were originally written in Farsi, and they were called the "1001 Nights". The Arabic text itself is a translation of the Farsi, and it was also called the "1001 Nights".
I think Stewart probably ran the text through an online translating site :)
I asked what any members' favourite Arabic book is, excluding the Qur'an or religious books. My favourite was one called Omar Ben AbdulAziz. I also asked if anyone had recommendations for some books or sites that sell...
For some reason, most books published in the Middle East have a very unfriendly cover.
They're either hardcover books with golden engravings that look good in bookcases, or they're a weird kind of paperback, that's 2/3rds the size of an A4 page and not very portable, even if thin.
The...
Oh? I'll look that up then. I don't know what language that would be in. But Safia is an Arabic name for females, and it means "pure". A Jewess from Medina who married the prophet Mohammed was called Safia, so a lot of people who use the name today call themselves after her.
I think you're quite right about "The Land of Black Gold". It's set in Saudi Arabia and features some Arabic profanity, as well as a scene in which a man is kicked from behind as he's prostrating in prayer, and a young Crown Prince who's spoiled. Another one is "The Crab with Golden Claw" which...
Hi again everyone.
I didn't read much except for the newspaper since I last visited, but I got through some Tin Tin comics, and I think I figured out which four are banned in Arabic. The forumer who suggested some, suggested correctly.
I was wondering whether anyone here has ever written a...
Thanks for the welcome.
I used to read Roald Dahl when I was a kid and then later Michael Crichton. But then I only read non-fiction, mostly comparative religion books, politics, history, popular science.
For the past while I can barely even manage reading my school books (Pathologic Basis...
Hmm.. well I'm trying to write the next bit, and no I don't want him to be religious either.
The story will keep branching (there will be two chapter two's, four chapter threes, eight chapter fours.. etc), since there are two choices of what happens. So the story could go many ways.
I think the person who started writing the first chapter of this story chose something that not everyone is interested in, and it's hard to continue.
Anyone in favour of starting another one from scratch?
Yes, I said in another post that I haven't read a book of fiction since I was 16 except for Arabian Nights volume one. I read until page 20 of this book, so it means I didn't finish it, so I can't say I've read it.
I said that I generally like the idea of Afghan society as an RPG world, but...
E for Additives (I just bought it because it cost 1 euro on sale - and that was because it was printed in 1980-something and the scientific info in it was obsolete).
The Terrorists of Irustan by Louise Marley, because it's just full of crap and the author was too afraid to say she's talking...
Anyone read this book?
I bought it after someone recommended it to me, but it was so bad that I threw it on the floor after page 20 and kept it lying on the floor for two weeks as punishment for its bad content.
Other than that, the pages smelled bad.
But I liked the use of a science...
