Recently, I've been browsing and buying online, but now I'm getting back into reading more seriously, I quite enjoy wandering the library or bookshops in my lunch hour. Even if I already have a stack of books in mind I enjoy just browsing, making mental additions to the TBR list.
The longest...
Midkemia is the country as a whole. I believe Elvandar is the forest you're looking for? The tree city place? I just read that chapter yesterday, it does sound like an amazing place. I guess I'm a sucker for anything elven :o
I wouldn't say Hogwarts was a boring choice; it gives credit to...
Sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe a good way to lose my writing virginity! The idea of writing a novel is always one I've entertained but I've never put any energy into. Maybe this is the incentive I need. Not sure if I can fit it around school but if I set myself some targets, maybe I'll be able...
I'm sorry, my critiquing skills aren't so great, but I did enjoy reading that. Sure different to things I usually read, but was well written and I enjoyed it.
The transition from general reflection to real life event, like from paragraph two to three sometimes seems a little like a change of...
Was just thinking about the effort that goes into creating a fantasy/sci fi universe and how many intricately though out universes there must be now (thousands I'm sure?).
That got me thinking about which would be more pleasant than others so started to wonder;
If I could live in any fantasy...
None particularly stand out for me, but I had a browse and while not particularly catchy, the line
"Like many of us, I think, my father spent the measure of his life piecing together a story he would never understand" - Rule Of Four
was quite meaningful.
I apologise, this is a little off...
Mine would be:
Dissolution by C.J Samson, very dull, didn't manage to plough my way to the end.
Rule Of Four; I decided to read it after all the praise I heard from people and read in reviews. I finished it, but thought it was a bit of a let down considering all the good words I heard. They...
I've had it delivered to my inbox everyday for about three years now, and even though I'm not an office man, still really enjoy it. I used to get Get Fuzzy as well but when I changed email addresses didn't resubscribe. That was quite good too as I remember.
Another "not well drawn yet very...
Give them a try? Read them casually alongside something more serious, and if you get into it, finish them off, if not, let them go and you've still got something to fall back on if you're reading more than one book.
If by similar you mean similar storylines, I can't help, but if you mean in the same genre, I read the Wind Singer trilogy after HDM. It's possibly aimed at people slighlty younger (I don't remember exactly) but I enjoyed them, maybe worth a look.
I recently started reading Magician. Popped into the library in my lunch break last weekend and saw it there, remembered a few recommendations and picked it up.
I'm getting through it at a steady rate which is usually a sign I'm enjoying a book, and I am quite happy with it. It's shaping up...
I look forward to it also. The sequel will be good to see how things work out, and I guess the prequel will allow her to set any story she likes in her world.
I don't write but presume if I'd spend so long crafting a universe, it'd be a shame to just let it die after a couple of books...
I decided not to drink alcohol partly due to a non-drinking character in a book I read once. Not hugely influential or completely to do with him, but that's something I've changed due to reading a book. Don't think I've read anything else I've considered influential more than just putting across...
I send things to America quite a bit. I sent a square 20cm box, not too heavy, just had a teddy bear in it, that cost about £4 if I remember right, like $7.50 ish? That was reasonable and a book will be smaller, probably a similar weight?
Just a guideline.
A few of my suggestions have already been mentioned, but when I was about that age, I enjoyed reading;
The Hobbit
The Hardy Boys
His Dark Materials - Phillip Pullman
The Wind Singer Trilogy - William Nicholson
The Animorphs Series - K.A Applegate.
The last three I'm not 100% sure when...
Excuse my perhaps ignorance also, but is there much difference between this and the "Book of the Month" format? Seems to me, unless there's a benefit I've not cottoned onto that it'd be a lot less hassle to just all read the book (own copies) at the same time and discuss it that way?
Sounds...
I wouldn't say I was really affected by gender. I've preferred all crime fiction I've read by female authors to males, maybe just a coincidence, but fantasy I've read both male and female and have enjoyed both.
I do however notice race in a subtle (perhaps) way. I'm from England, but find books...
We flicked straight from UFC to WWF wresting, it was amusing how childish wresting looks anyway after not having watched it for a good few years, but after watching a guy actually get punched in the face, it had a whole new light to it! :p
