books you would recommend to 17-year-old avid reader...

If you have not read it, I recommend Of Mice and Men if you haven't read it already. It's a classic. It's one of my favorite books, and it is short so it will not take up a lot of your time. I think it is interesting from the persepective of a young man who probably has a lot of big dreams and...

    Why do boys hate reading?

I love to read. And I am pretty sure that I am male. I think more girls/women read simply because they like to read romance books and romantic stories. It's like their porn, I sometimes think. They all seem to do it. I think it is more about the romance for them, and not so much about the...

What do you use as a bookmark?

What do I use as a bookmark? I use the library receipt that they give me whenever I borrow a book, which is almost always the way I get a book to read.

The Best Book You've Ever Read?

I have to say that the best book I ever read is 1984 by George Orwell. I have never read a more accurate allegory for the path of geopolitics. I only hope we can get off the path.

    My Current TBR List...

Out of all those books I cannot find one that I recall reading. Have you decided which one you will be reading next?

    1 in 4 Americans don't read-CNN article

What bothers me is people who don't read but watch TV. Then again, if it wasn't for them, people wouldn't think of me as so smart.

Ben Mezrich: Bringing Down the House

I haven't read it, but it looks interesting. I'll try to read it soon. Did the kids make any more money from the book? I mean, did Ben Mezrich pay them for the story?

    Amazon 2007 fall book releases

I am most interested by "Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's," but I don't know if I'll read it.

Does anyone remember those cheap Penguin Classics?

Well, I'm too young to remember the good old days, but I still see Penguin Classics in the stores today, and I think I've read a few, but I don't recall the publisher of most of the books I've read.

    Censorship (librarians, teachers)

I think it is a great comparison to compare teachers' sense of duty to that of medical doctors in regards to the Hippocratic Oath. However, I think by even teaching at a school the teacher has forfeited some of that responsibility in exchange for the values and dogma of the institution at which...

    Author would appreciate some help

I think the cover art affects me more than I realize. It gives context to the book description. If the cover art (and book color) is cool, then I will already have the idea of coolness in my mind when I read the synopsis. It's the same if the cover art were goofy. Of course, if the synopsis is...

    Censorship (librarians, teachers)

Public schools need to censor, so that the vast majority of people are willing to send their kids to the school. Most parents wouldn't send their children to a school with porn and excessive violence in the reading material. Private schools often censor for the same reason, because that's what...

    Insomnia

I'm a total nice person. I often find myself up late at nights without being able to fall asleep. Avoid TV and computers. You could try reading on a couch until you get tired, since you can't read in the bedroom that late.

    The Color of Water

I haven't read that book, but those are very interesting quotes. I think it is true that race is a major issue that often gets treated as unspeakable. I wish that race would just go away, and we could all be united. Biologically, there is only one human race. We have simply divided ourselves...

    Watergate scandal book reviews

I can't think of anything especially memorable. Generally, I found it most interesting to see "Deep Throat" described as a normal person, with conflictions and worries just like all of us.

    1 in 4 Americans don't read-CNN article

I've been told that 80% of Americans did not buy or read a book in the last year. I think CNN's poll gives people too much credit.

    Watergate scandal book reviews

Did anyone read The Secret Man by Bob Woodward? I liked it. It was more about Deep Throat than watergate, though.

What Makes a Book a Work of Literature?

I think every book is a work of literature. The writing on a street sign isn't literature, but any book is literature. All authors put a lot of time and effort into their books, and they all have value.

    The Wall Street Journal

I use to buy it about once a week at my old job on my lunch breaks or before I went home. I liked it, but not enough to subscribe.

Howard Zinn: A People's History of the United States

I read Howard Zinn's book, A People's History of the United States. I liked it. If you liked it, you might also like Lies My Teacher Told Me. I just ordered a movie documentary about Howard Zinn, but I forget the title.
