About to be published but want to promote my writing via other works

Hello, You've probably considered this already, but how about places like myspace and facebook? Good luck with your writing. : ) pooh_bah

Has anyone here enrolled on a creative writing course / degree?

Hi Stewart, Thank you for your interesting reply. Your idea of learning from what you enjoy and being conscious of the elements that make fiction work for *you* is a terrific approach. Learning dialogue, pace, plotting and so on in a classroom is all very well, but my concern is that...

Has anyone here enrolled on a creative writing course / degree?

Hi wilderness, Thank you for your reply. Glad you're finding your course beneficial. If it's not too personal, do you mind me asking what you have written / are currently writing? In what ways did the course help you improve your work? Best of luck with that. : ) pooh_bah

What books appeal to men and are there enough new titles that appeal to them?

Hi everyone, What types of books do most men prefer to read? I’m asking because there’s been some debate about whether most best sellers / new titles consider male audiences or whether, since women in the UK apparently buy more books, most books are marketed to women. Do you think...

    Construction of your personal library?

I have shelves / bookcases on virtually every wall. No real method to the madness, just books everywhere. I have thousands and can't be too picky where I put them. They go where ever there's room. To put them all in one place, one room, I'd need a pretty huge room. Love the idea of having a...

The Most overrated fiction book ever?

I can't get into LOTR either. Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake looks more interesting, must get around to reading that. Not hugely keen on most fantasy - to each his own, I guess.

    Writing tips from Kurt Vonnegut

Wow, I agree with many of these writing tips. Except for maybe the Vonnegut take on suspense. A bit of suspense can be good. You can keep the reader in the loop about certain things and still keep him/ her in suspense. I think any set of rules should be flexible though. If you adhere to them...

Has anyone here enrolled on a creative writing course / degree?

Hi SevenWritez, Thanks for your reply. Good point you raised about being influenced by what your teacher regards as important. It's true what you said, you want to learn, but some people may find a having a specific approach pushed upon them a hindrance as opposed to a help. Sounds...

    Best SF&F TV Shows

Does anyone remember Land of the Giants the 60s sci-fi TV show? That was so funny.

    adventure movies

Do Vietnam movies count as adventure movies or just war movies? Thought I'd ask because Apocalypse Now was quite an adventure, with surreal bits and dramatic bits. I enjoyed Platoon too. But maybe you folks mean films more like Pirates and Indiana Jones?

    Best SF&F TV Shows

Buffy and Angel were excellent. Love DS9 and X-Files (even though some of the voice-over Mulder/ Scully monologues in the latter were ridiculous!) As Peronel asked - does LOST count as fantasy? It's pretty good. I keep meaning to watch Xena because it's meant to be great.

    Great Lyrics

Bob Dylan wrote some pretty cool lyrics. Good messages in some of them, I just cannot appreciate his voice.

    eye problem

Cutting out caffeine and reducing stress helps with muscle spasms. Although scooping at it with cutlery seems to be popular here! ; p

    Anyone in/finished grad school?

Totally agree with cmbroom about grad school (or postgraduate degrees as we call them in the UK) being about "pulling from within". If you start doing this as an undergrad, it's easier to get into the habit. I did my MA when I was 21 at one of the older, more recognized universities in the...

What are your plans for the Summer?

Enjoying the warm weather, if we get any in London. Maybe doing some reading and writing. Having some friends over and maybe going to visit some friends in Yorkshire.

How long have you been @ B&R?

    A few days.

    Are you a re-reader?

I like to re-read some books - especially after a few years. I find they resonate differently at different times in my life. You sometimes pick up on things that you previously missed.

    The Book Depository

I buy a lot from play.com and amazon.co.uk and amazon.com. I think there's a Book Depository on amazon.co.uk's market place. Could be the same place. I've ordered from them via amazon, good service.

What do you use as a bookmark?

Anything handy and nearby. Old receipts, bits of scrap paper – anything, even a clean Kleenex on occasion.

The Most overrated fiction book ever?

I avoid Dickens like the plague. (Apologies to any Dickens fans out there but he bores me to tears)
