Do you not consider Narnia preteen?
Not really, but that's probably because I've heard of parents reading the stories to their children and the audio CD cover art makes it look like 9-10 would be fine for those stories.
I may sound like a broken record, if you've read my other comments, but anything by Roald Dahl would surely entertain, perhaps starting off with Danny the Champion of the World or The BFG or The Twits? If something more modern then perhaps Andy Stanton or Philip Ardagh. Both of those authors are hilarious and very much in the Roald Dahl mould.
