Have you ever had a book signed by the author?

I sometimes hear about these book signing events. Anyone ever been to one, or had a book signed?
 
would have like to have gone to a few signings in my life... but i could never be bother waiting in a line-up

i'm not into celeb's that much to make it worth my time :)

I went to an Anne Rice book signing. She had it at an old church here in New Orleans. It was the perfect atmosphere for the signing. I have several first edition signed books by Anne. One of my friends go to every one she has. She sometimes has blood drives at the same time and those that give blood get to go to the front of the line.

wow...anne rice? i've read some (not much :D ) of her books, and i thinks it rocks to live in the same city as her. i saw her on tv once and she was like in this mansion where she has like lifelike statues of her characters (creepy) oh, and there were also these totally loser crazy people who claimed to be "vampyres" (notice the fancy spelling :rolleyes: ) do thsoe kooks actually exist and roam about new orleans? if people acted like that in my town i'd be so freaked out i'd move. **shudder** -B
 
If anyone knows some dates for book signings, post them in the "Book News" area. Sounds like people like to have their books signed by their favourite authors.

I guess authors only bother signing hardbacks?
 
I went to a program with my school a long time ago, and it was a feturette on canadain authors. it was really great. not only did they sign the books, they gave lectures, did question answer, and had real conversations. It was really helpfull for anybody considering a career in literature. I had 20 minute conversations with authors i really liked at the time, where they dispensed advice, talked about inspiration, they were even willing t help if somebody had the dreaded " writers Block".
 
I've been to signings for Raymond Benson, the current author of the James Bond novels, mainly because I thought they'd make nice additions to my little Bond collection. Last week I attended a writing class he taught nearby for a local college. The only other author who I might like to get something signed by would be Tom Clancy, but as I understand it, he's only come to Chicago once, and his signings usually get pretty crowded.
 
its too bad that many of my favourite authors dont live in this
country but I did manage to go to a book signing by my fave
Sci-Fi/Fantasy Author : Ursula Le Guin for on here latest Earth Sea novel "The Other Wind". Usually I think its great to attend those especially if the author is giving a talk of some sort prior to the signing.

However I must admit I do hate it when people stand around
the authors and practically harass them into signing every single
book they own :confused:

Well, August 14 I'll be at Clancy's signing in Chicago for his new novel, Red Rabbit.:) Can't wait.
 
I've got a friend who used to work in a bookshop, so have avoided the queuing side, though that said, I've only got a couple of Terry Pratchet's and an Alistair Reynolds signed.
 
I went to a Terry Pratchett signing by mistake once... by which I mean that I went into a bookshop, and there he was, big hat and all. I'm not a huge signing-session person, though - I reserve that sort of bowing and scraping for racing drivers! (Stirling Moss, Juha Kankkunen, Colin McRae, Roy Salvadori, etc.)

I took the trouble to get one signed once and it was promptly borrowed forever by a friend of mine. Had to get another one signed for him to get it back (of my own volition. He liked it so much and all.) I do have a friend who makes it a point to get all of her children's books signed by the author. I guess that type of book signing would be a bit more subdued than the mob scene you would find if Clancy were signing them somewhere.
 
The Anne Rice signing I went to was a circus. I guess that's to be expected. I've never been to a children's book signing.
 
I have a few signed books, but I bought them off Ebay. Working in a bookstore I have also attended quite a few book signings, the only memorable one being when Billy Bob Thornton did a signing with the screenplay for Sling Blade.
His mom is a fortune teller in our town and buys a good portion of our new age section on a regular basis, but although we knew Billy Bob Thornton's mom was a fortune teller in Hot Springs, no one put it together until one of the girls from work went to her shop and saw the pictures of Billy Bob all over the wall.
 
Dawn, I'm sorry, this is totally off topic but I just gotta know if you stuck some garlic cloves in your pocket before you left home that day you went to the Anne Rice signing.

resurrected an old thread close to my heart!

everybody here should go to author events. we used to do a lot of them untill the evil empire turned the last bastion of literature into just a place to buy books.

i used to help introduce authors for the paperback fiction department, and what a laugh that was, basically the author would turn up around half an hour early, if you were introducing you'd sit with them for that half an hour - offer them a drink etc. then you go out and introduce them to the audience (usually well sozzled at this point), they'd read from their new book for half an hour, answer questions for maybe another 15 mins then sign books.

we'd usually get them to the pub after that, for a laugh, or the big authors' publicists would take you for a meal sometimes - i preferred the pub.

anyway they were great times and i have loads of dedicated books because of it, if you go to an event i recommend getting books dedicated - okay you obliterate any additional value but it makes a nice connection with the authors for book lovers.

I have books signed by Anne Rice, Peter Benchley, Dean Koontz, Sue Henry, Christopher Priest, John Edward, David Kent, Ray Sipherd, Tim Powers, David Pirie, Jason Cohen, Steve Berry and a few others I can't think of off the top of my head.

My main goal though is to have one signed by Dan Brown. :D

I love my signed Edward Albee play, I also have the tickets to the performance I went to tucked inside.

We had Ray Bradbury sign at the bookstore Wolf worked at. THAT was a circus. Really nice guy.

We had Jimmy Carter at a book signing once. A circus with secret service men.

But the biggest signing was for Emeril's cookbooks. Insane.
