Have you ever met one of your favourite authors?

i can't say that i have but it'd be rather interesting to. i'm not one to get excited over celeberties, bands, or writers though. i'd want to meet someone so i'd have a story tho =P and the chance to have some sort of intellegent conversation
 
I have never met any of my favourite famous personalities (be it an author, actor or singer) because of where I live. I would /love/ to go overseas for a short period of time to go to some of these book signings, though. Too bad they arn't all grouped together into some kind of "book-signing season". It would make the trip seem so much more worth while :p
 
I've met Kinky Friedman & Christine Wiltz, had my pic taken with both of them. Was able to spend about an hour with Christine and a few minutes with Kinky, they were both very nice.
I'd love to meet Christopher Moore.

Wow, JLB is one of my favorite writers and I am pretty sure I would like him if I ever met him. I have met John Grisham and Rita Dove but would gladly do an exchange to meet JLB. Grisham is an ok guy.

For ABC, Many moons ago I spent an evening with George Jones drinking beer. Myself, George, and a disc jockey who was the husband of our secretary.

Trust No-Show Jones to show up for a beer drinking session ;) I bet he had some wild stories..my mom worked at an airport resturaunt several years before she died, and met a number of celebreties: Gloria Gaynor, Count Basie, Jim Stafford, Charlie Daniels, Jerry Clower and the road crew for Uriah Heep. She said that Count Basie and Jerry Clower sat and talked to the other diners until they had had to leave, and that Jim Stafford was super nice too.My dh met Steve Martin many many moons ago. He was nice to some of the Fuel and Line people, but cut the snooty secretary off cold..

It was in Beaumont, Texas where I met George Jones and it was sometime between 1958 and 1960, can't remember exactly. At the time it was no big deal but now looking back I realize that I spent an evening with who is now recognized by most as the greatest "Country" singer ever.

Off-topic. A little story about one of my favorite groups..."Riders In The Sky".:)
We have seen them perform many times but one time at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA they were performing and the place was sold out. There were many people standing ouside who couldn't get in. After playing about 2 songs the Riders all picked up their instruments and walked out the door and played a couple complete songs for the people outside who couldn't get in. When the Riders returned everyone in the audience applauded them. :)

Still off-topic, but gets back sorta..I am not at all suprised to hear a story like this about these guys. They're a bunch of nice guys..did you know Ranger Doug has initials after his name? He's also written at least one book on the history of the singing cowboy..I think it is called Singing in the Saddle, by Douglas B. Green.
 
I met R.A. Salvatore earlier this month, he was such a nice guy. He chatted and joked around like we were old friends of his. He is very interactive with his fans, he even named a character in one of his books once after a guy on his messageboards that was in chat with him once. I was forced by the guy to ask at the book signing if the character was going to be seen again, and Bob had a chuckle and told the story to everyone else there. He remembers people from his messageboards and those who e-mail him, he was even more friendly than I had been told, it was great.

I am a big fan of the Riders so let me see if I can outdo you.
Did you know that "The Idol Of America's Youth" has a Master's degree in Literature.
And, that the "King Of The Cowboy Fiddler's" has a PH.D from M.I.T.in Theoretical Plasma Physics.
And that Too Slim has a degree in Wildlife Management.

And finally, do you know how "The Yodel Was Born?? :D ;)

And I once again promise....no more off-topic from me.

That's what I meant about the initials after their names:) I didn't know what their degrees were in, but I knew they were highly edumacated men! It's hard to remember that when you see them on tv doing one of their 'varmit' dances:cool: I'm not sure about the birth of the yodel story. I think I've heard it, but the remaining two synapses are highly challenged...

The only author I met was R.A. Salvatore. I went when his novel of Star Wars Episode II came out. The thing was, I was never a fan of his and have never read his books. I was in a shopping mall when I saw this line of about 12 people. Because I love Star Wars and because I had never seen an author, I said "Why not?". So I waited 10 minutes in line to see an author I had never heard of!
 
I met Jackie Collins - who i've adored since i read one of her first books at the age of 15. I now have ALL her books and have read most of them at least twice. I met her a couple of years ago at a book signing and she was gorgeous. The minute i saw her i had tears in my eyes! She was so down to earth and friendly and i must have been chatting to her for about 5 mins!
Even had my photo taken with her!
 
I met Pam Houston before she became my favorite author... it was meeting her and getting her second book (Waltzing the Cat) that turned me onto her. I have read everything she's written since meeting her in 1999.

There is another author I met at that same conference- one I used to have a lot of respect for but that has changed. I met Alice Walker and was totally shocked by how rude she was. My hope is that she was just having a bad day, but I was really disappointed by her treatment of everyone. :(
 
I met Timothy Zahn at a Star Wars convention last April. He signed my copy of Heir to the Force and let me take a picture with him. Later on, he gave a speech/lecture/Q&A over his stories. He was amazingly polite, honest, patient, funny, and intelligent and I was totally impressed with him. He not only met my expectations but went far beyond them.
I would definitely like to meet my favorite authors. I feel I already have a connection with them through their work, but I feel I understand writing better if I understand the people who wrote them. For this reason, I try to learn everything I can about my favorite authors. As for the ones I meet...well, I certainly appreciate Timothy Zahn's work more than ever now that I've met the man!
 
I've never met any authors, unfortunately, but I have exchanged emails with a few.

I sent an e-mail to Douglas Preston and he replied rather quickly and was very gracious that I had enjoyed his work, he also freely answered my questions.

William C. Dietz I found to be VERY friendly. He answered my questions, also very gracious, and even complimented my e-mail handle. :D
 
I read primarily modern fiction so my favorite authors pretty much still do the book tour promo deal. I have gotten to meat a few of them this way and it is pretty interesting. And I get the books I have collected autographed.
 
wow, this thread is kinda dead...people haven't posted in a while.

I've met T.A. Barron and Sarah Dunant and they both turned out to be very nice, interesting people.

Im meeting Frances Sherwood on Thursday, in 4 days!
