Hi everyone,

I'm Nicki, and I'm from Reading, in southern England. I've been a book addict since I was very young -- as early as I can remember, my folks would give me extra money, in addition to my regular allowance, that I was only allowed to spend on books, so I'd come home with armfuls of them. Nothing's changed there, except that now I have to pay for them. ;)

I'm primarily a fantasy fan, and enjoy the likes of Robin Hobb, Guy Gavriel Kay, Neil Gaiman and George R. R. Martin, but I'll generally try anything once.

Currently have an obsession with 1930s-40s travelling carnivals, so I'm hunting down books in any way related to that!

Nice to meet you all.

Welcome to the forum Nicki :)

I used to love the small fantasy bookshop behind Broad Street - it was never the same after they were bought out :(

Hi Nicki,
Welcome, welcome.
And re that book allowance: Oh, you lucky!
So please tell me, is it pronounced 'reeding' or 'redding' over there. We have one of them over here too, and it's 'redding.'
But, apart from that, dive in and swim. There aren't too many rocks and the water is warm.
Good to see you,
Peder

It's 'redding' here too. Funnily enough, I used to know someone who lived in Reading, PA. From what I gather, it's a bit nicer than our Reading. :)

Thanks for the welcomes!

Hello and welcome :) We have a sub section of the forum dedicated to fantasy and SF Have you tried Strange and Norrell yet? If you like Neil Gaiman then type stuff then I think you will love it. Neil himself gave the novel a huge thumbs up!

I own a copy (partly because I simply had to own the only copy in town with the lovely black-edged pages!), but I'm afraid it's still in the enormous and ever-growing TBR pile. The comparison to Neil Gaiman just got it a whole lot closer to the top, though. :)

The selection in Reading just keeps going downhill, unfortunately. There was a nice science fiction/fantasy/game store specialist branch of Blackwell's on Friar Street as well, but since they turned the lower storey into a travel bookshop, the fantasy selection on the upper level is barely worth a glance.

Thank heavens for Amazon!

Dire straits has found a new best friend! :D

Welcome to the forum, Vardarys! :)

Ah, heard GGK mentioned somewhere while I was eating, so I logged in and voila! :D

Welcome V! I'm a big fan of GGK myself, and have convinced a handful of good friends here to try him too. What is your favourite GGK book?
