Songs Stuck In Your Head

Ten years ago on a cold dark night
There was someone killed
'Neath the town hall lights
There were few at the scene
But they all agreed
That the slayer who ran
Looked a lot like me..

The judge said son
What is your alibi
If you were somewhere else
Then you won't have to die

I spoke not a word
Though it mean my life
For I had been in the arms
Of my best friend's wife

The sky lit up
And eternity is near
She stood in the crowd
And shed not a tear

But sometimes at night
When the cold wind moans
She walks these hills
In long black veil
She visits my grave
When the night winds wail
In a long black veil
She cries o'er my bones

The Long Black Veil still gives me shivers! Did you know that Sharyn McCrumb used a line from this song for one of her Ballad book? She Walks These Hills is one of my favorite books.

Also, have you heard The Cheiftains version with Mick Jagger? I was leery of it at first, but I like it.

For those that have not heard The Long Black Veil by Lefty Frizzell,,,it is a must, as abecedarian states it will give you shivers.

Was not aware of the other bits of info.

A cowgirl's pony is her pal all day
They ride together till the close of day
Goodnight little cowgirl may your dreams be sweet
Goodnight little pony to your slumber retreat

They used to tell me
Ride em cowboy
Don't let him slow you down
Ride em Cowboy
Don't let him throw you down
You can't make no money
If you hit the ground..

I sometimes get random bits of songs stuck going around in my head and since they usually get stuck there by other people, I thought I'd share and see if I could inflict them on the rest of you. Share yours with the other members. I will start:

Splish, Splash, I was taking a bath.
Long about a Saturday night.
Are there songs that get stuck in your head. :)

Here's one of my all-time favorites:

Almost heaven, west virginia
Blue ridge mountains
Shenandoah river -
Life is old there
Older than the trees
Younger than the mountains
Growin’ like a breeze

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

All my memories gathered ¡®round her
Miner’s lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine
Teardrops in my eye

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

I hear her voice
In the mornin’ hour she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
And drivin’ down the road I get a feelin’
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads
Take me home, now country roads
Take me home, now country roads

Words and music by bill danoff, taffy nivert and john denver

I hear it in my head a lot..Which is fine until I start to sing along..

And then there's the Misheard Lyrics version of this song. A friend used to think Kenny Rogers was singing,"With 4 hundred children.."

I did too! I came to the conclusion that they must have run some kind of orphanage... It took me years to work out the proper lyric!

Morrissey's "It's Hard To Walk Tall When You're Small" has been going round in my head for the last five days now. It's a good job I like it. :)

All this hurricane talk has these lyrics whirling around in my head:

I see the bad moon arising.
I see trouble on the way.
I see earthquakes and lightnin’.
I see bad times today.

Chorus:
Don’t go around tonight,
Well, it’s bound to take your life,
There’s a bad moon on the rise.

I hear hurricanes ablowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

Chorus
All right!

Hope you got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like we’re in for nasty weather.
One eye is taken for an eye.

Chorus
Chorus
Creedence Clearwater Revival

Oh definately.

Also:

'In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight'

:D

isn't it funny how that song never goes away completely?? Just before The Lion King came out, a friend was telling me about how excited her dd was to find this "cool new song" about lions(Amy was a cat freak) on the jukebox at our local Pizza Hut, and when she played it, my friend just about wet herself from laughing at this "new song' her dd had discovered..

Hurricane Rita has me thinking:

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea winds blowin'
I still see her dark eyes glowin'

you know, all the time I was growing up and hearing Galveston, I didn't have a clue or care what the song was about. It was odd, but one day about 10 years ago, as I listened and thought about the time period the song came out..I had a "well DUH" moment..nothing major, just a little war in southeast Asia...some of us are incredibly slow :p

The rest of the lyrics.

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea winds blowin'
I still see her dark eyes glowin'
She was 21 when I left Galveston

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea waves crashing
While I watch the cannons flashing
I clean my gun and dream of Galveston

I still see her standing by the water
Standing there lookin' out to sea
And is she waiting there for me?
On the beach where we used to run

Galveston, oh Galveston, I am so afraid of dying
Before I dry the tears she's crying
Before I watch your sea birds flying in the sun
At Galveston, at Galveston

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, where have you been, my darling young one?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains,
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways,
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests,
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans,
I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

With the nasally tone from Dylan thrown in. :)

I hate it when you know barely ANY words to the song, but the 2 or 3 you actually know stay stuck running in circles in your head. The other night I was having a drink at a restaurant and "Do you like Pina Coladas..." was stuck in there. And that's STILL all I know from the song.

Could it have been Escape by Rupert Holmes (which Jimmy Buffett covered)? I always try to listen to songs I get stuck in my head in their entirety a couple times. It usually does the trick for me.

In other news. I have this jingle from a sour cream commercial stuck in my head. Something or another about "a dollop of Daisy". Of course, with a commercial you can't just download the song and listen to it. BAH!

Maybe you should just eat some sour cream :)
