The Importance of Plot/Setting/Theme?

My dictionary says they are the same thing:

Plot: the story or sequence of events in a narrated or presented work such as a novel, play, or movie

Story: the plot of a novel, play, motion picture, or other fictional narrative work

This only illustrates the inadequacy of one word to define another.

Yes, that sounds very nice. I have a verb 'tupping' which is the act of making a chair too warm by sitting in it. Some people are capable of tupping up an entire room, making it almost uninhabitable.

Does the dictionary define things for people or do people define things for the dictionary? I mean, in the Creationists's view, was there an OED sitting in the Garden of Eden when Adam got there? No, sir. Adam said unto Eve, 'write this down, woman. Aardvaark--an ugly antsnorter." And so it was done unto the world that the dictionary was born word by word, and then it begat the Koran and the Bible, etc., and that's when the trouble really started.

Well how important is it to you? Do you need a specific setting to enjoy a book? Must there be dragons and elves? Gore? Or do you just let a great writer take you where their story goes and enjoy the beauty of that not relying on gimmicks or standards of a genre?

I'm not that particular when it comes to a setting. All that is required for me, is a plot and setting that is believable, or at least an unbelievable one that the author convincingly sells as being believable.

There are so many books and authors that I have heard about and haven't yet read, that I pretty much read randomly what appeals to me at the moment. When I browse the shelves I see enormous numbers of additional interesting titles that I wish I could get around to reading, based on title and subject alone, so that doesn't make narrowing it down any easier. Only among detective stories will I read all of an author's books if I like him. Among classic authors I tend to want to read another book by a different author, instead of a second one by the same author, in order to get broader coverage I suppose. If I could, I would read 'em all! Maybe all the authors first, then all the books. Dreams, dreams!!!
