La Grande illusion (1937) Jean Renoir

Banned by Mussolini and seized by Hitler (Goebbels referred to Renoir as "Cinematic Public Enemy Number 1"), La Grande illusion is the granddaddy of PoW escape films.

A group of French officers is captured during WWI ad taken to a PoW camp for officers. After various failed escape attempts, they are shipped to a supposedly escape-proof castle (shades of Colditz). From there, two of them hatch an escape bid.

But La Grande ilusion is far more than an escape film. At its heart if a message of shared humanity and the suggestion that, if we all come to understand that we are all essentially the same, we can stop fighting.

Surprisingly light-hearted throughout (another precursor of British WWII PoW films), it packs a powerful punch.

The performances of Jean Gabin and Erich von Stroheim are excellent.

"no country for old men " my fav this year, the best cohen for me.best casting ever.waouhh....
"kite runner" not as bad as the book.Still i felt like shooting the main caractere till the end.

"The mist" quite funny,i like the end. Here to a very original casting. No stars, thank god.

I liked "Michael Clayton" but my DVD went still 10mm before the end.

Martian Child -loved it
Michael Clayton -ok
I love movies as much as books. Last weekend i sat by myself (kids asleep)peace and quite) and watched "The Namesake" I loved it It has to do with an Indian family and the parents moving to the U.S., but alot of immigrants can relate.

My favorite movies : Shawshank redemption-Morgan Freeman ,Tim Robbins
The Notebook
and the list goes on and on.

:) A comedy coming out soon I can't wait to see (if you guys know "Harold and Kumar go to Whitecastle" the new one "Harold and Kumar escape Guantanamo Bay" should be more hilarious (my son got me into this ,lol)

and ofcourse the new Indiana Jones:D

Beowulf - I quite enjoyed this. I thought it would be pure silliness, but there was quite a story behind it.

The Mosquito Coast - I watched this years ago, but didn't remember much of it. It was a good film, except Harrison Ford's character went a bit over the top in the end.

The Thing - a classic horror film, that I've somehow missed until now. Worth watching.

I'm a big John Carpenter fan - The Thing is one of his best. I've watched it dozens of times over the years.

I watched Rise of the Foot Soldier the other night. It was ok, but without a single character to like in it I found myself not caring really.

Another one I forgot to mention is Lucky You. It wasn't very good, but provided some nice eye-candy in the form of Eric Bana. :D

Michael Clayton - It was decent but I'm not sure it should have been a Best Picture nominee. Sidney Pollack's jaded lawyer character was the best part of the movie.

DEXTER!!!!!

I have watched it once or twice, it's dark, and thought provoking I guess. Is he right or wrong in what he is doing etc..It makes think about people taking the law into their own hands.

I just saw ANALYZE THIS with Robert DeNiro, hillarious!!

In May:
In theatres:
Iron Man - loved it. My 3rd fave Marvel film. Stay after the credits.
Speed Racer - they need to remove all the dialogue. Lots of eye candy... it was pretty to look at it. That's about it.
At home:
Donnie Darko (director's cut) - hadn't seen the whole thing since 2002. Decided to check it out in preparation for the sequel (S. Darko: S. Darko (2009)).

Most recently:
In theatres:
Indiana Jones - Crystal Skull: I was entertained. Didn't care for the chase and fight scenes. Not a fan of Shia LaBeouf, but he was okay Cate Blanchett is smokin' as usual. Karen Allen (Marion) looks amazing!

The Strangers: The first movie ever to make me consider leaving early. And NOT because it was bad. From all the previews, you know what's going to happen, you know how it will end... but it built up so much anxiety that it made me so uncomfortable. I watched it with my boyfriend and his sister and they felt the same way. It was damn good. Must see.

At home:
There Will Be Blood: It was amazing. Lewis is awesome. I had no idea what it was about. But I think I like No Country for Old Men more.

An American Crime: such a sad story. Catherine Keener is amazing and I can't believe how skinny Ellen Page was! She was so great too.

Most recently in theaters:

Indiana Jones - Crystal Skull: I was really afraid that they might ruin it, but I was pleasently surprised and really LOVED IT!

Ironman-It had really amazing special effects, but I didn't think it was all it was cracked up to be personally

I always like to give comments to multiple groups of people when I can and this is one of those times. The most recent movie I watched was The Water Horse: The Legend of the Deep hereafter referred to as TWHTLOTD.

To the adults: TWHTLOTD is average in the way any ordinary MLB game in early June is average. What I mean is that it provides light entertainment that you don't feel you need to watch every little moment to get all this movie has to offer. Grab a beer, do some laundry, go get the mail but don't feel you need to watch TWHTLOTD from beginning to end.

To the not-adults-yet: TWHTLOTD is great fun. My daughter really enjoyed it, especially getting the chance to practice the new and interesting word "Crusoe." The monster is capricious but lovable and you can rest assured nothing untoward becomes of him. And Crusoe does in fact live in your backyard pool.
