Recommending a book like the Shannara Series

Terry Brooks' "Magic Kingdom for Sale" series is quite good, I enjoyed it much more than Shannara. Basically, a widower is discontented with his life, sees an ad in a catalog to buy a Magic Kingdom, buys it, and finds out that it's not exactly what he expected. Things are falling apart, magical...

The 12th Wheel of Time book

While I don't mind it being split into 3 books so much, with how much story is left to wrap up, does anyone else think it would be ridiculous to release the 3 sections that far apart? Having to potentially wait 2+ years to FINALLY read the ending is kind of a turnoff.

    Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle

I absolutely love Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle! I just found my old copies of the books a few months ago and re-read them all. My mom sent me a bunch of my books from when I was little for my daughter to have as she grows up, but I think I'm enjoying the books more than she is. ;) I keep being tempted to...

How Many Languages Do You Know and Use?

English of course, my native tongue. I used to be fluent in French, but I'd need to brush up. Greek and Latin from my college studies - Homer and the NT are so much cooler in the original Greek! I've sung all my life, so I picked up a little German and Italian along the way. I can't speak it in...

The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

I read the book for a class in college, thought it was quite good. I'd recommend it.

    short story idea. help please!

Seems to me like it would be a good idea to decide what type of story you want it to be. Obviously it could be scary, but for a fun twist it sounds like the type of thing you could make funny in the end - something silly has been "stalking" the guy around his house, instead of something scary...

Recommendations for my 11 year old little brother.

I'd also recommend the Chrestomanci books by Diana Wynne Jones. Big fan of her work. The Earthsea books by Ursula K. LeGuin are really good too. I also really liked Terry Brooks' Magic Kingdom for Sale series, but they're a little more adult than the other two. (Nothing explicit really, just the...

What ticks you off when reading a book/story?

I agree, I don't like excessive description that seems to just fill space or show off the author's wordiness. Little bits are okay, but paragraphs full of pointless description tend to put me to sleep! I hate when an author drags the ending of a book out FOREVER... I understand a complex plot...

    Awakening

This is the first in a series of loosely related short stories that I'm working on. Sci-fi / fantasy in nature. Any constructive feedback is great - even if you hated it, as long as you can say why! I'm especially interested in how quickly people figure out what's going on. Thanks! Awakening...

    AP English project on Schizophrenia

I don't know if this one is full-on schizophrenia, but there's a short story called "The Yellow Wallpaper," by Charlotte Perkins Gilman that is really good.

    McCaffrey conundrum

From what I remember of reading the Coelura, I think it was a random (and not even that great) short story. I didn't see any connections to Pern at all.

    Sheri S. Tepper: The Visitor

Ooh, sounds interesting. I'll have to give that one a try. I've only read her Gate to Women's Country, but I liked that a lot. Of course, where I'll fit it in along with all the books I got for b-day and Christmas, I don't know...

Children's Books you still love to read today.

One of my faves that no one's mentioned yet is "The Ordinary Princess" by M.M. Kaye. My 5th grade teacher gave it to me way back when, and I reread it a lot. I also absolutely love Dianna Wynn Jones' works, especially "Witch Week" and her other Chronicles of Chrestomanci books.

    Do people judge you?

I read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy too, so I also am sometimes embarrassed by the hideous covers. I wonder sometimes what the librarian will think, but it doesn't deter me from checking out the book. I know I did get different looks from people when I was in college and reading classic lit or...
