American Fever: A Tale of Romance & Pestilence Peter Christian Hall :stars4: An excellent read. Imagine that the flu pandemic is here and now. Are you ready? That is how this book reads. It's a interesting look at what might happen to our society should the flu hit us with the furor...

    Books for Christmas?

I bought four books and one gift card at Amazon to give as gifts this year. All the outlaws, I mean inlaws, are taken care of. I prefer getting books as well as giving them but no one ever seems to get the hint. Dang it. I think I might also pick up a $20 dollar gift certificate for a...

    Silver Rush Mysteries

I am currently on the first of Ann Parker's Silver Rush Mysteries - Silver Lies. Very enjoyable. Anyone intersted in historical mysteries might give it a go. The story takes place in the silver boom town of Leadeville Colorado during the, you guessed it, the silver rush. I enjoyed it so...

I had to set aside The House by Bently Little. I just couldn't go on with it. Too much emphasis on erotic thoughts about the child character/probably demon. It just got gross. I think I was looking for a good haunted house story and this wasn't it. I just wasn't in the mood. Blech!

As I write I am being subjected to "The Book of Eli" for the umpteenth time. There are certain films that my husband will insist on watching every time the come on cable. Eli and Mr. & Mrs. Smith are the worst offenders. Vengeance will be mine. Maybe there is a Ghost Hunters or Diners...

    Louise Penny: The Beautiful Mystery

I've only just started it but I'm loving it. As usual, Penny delivers on creating a setting that is dripping with atmosphere. A murder has occurred in a monastery that is completely isolated. I'm streaming gregorian chanting in the background as I read. Awesome.:D

    Speed reading?

Welcome rpgfreak. I only read for pleasure so I'm not all that concerned about time. For my usage, speed reading would be like going to a beautiful botanical garden and sprinting through it at full speed. So much would be missed. JMHO. Those folks going to school and having to get through...

So I have 20 books in my Amazon shopping cart

My shopping cart at amazon has a Romertopf (clay baking vessel) that I neither need nor have the room for. But I want it! It calls to me. I have no self-discipline.

My last three books have been Equal Rites, Wyrd Sister, & Witches Abroad by Pratchett. I'm loving these books. I am completely hooked at this point. I can't imagine how I have only now been made aware of these gems.

    Surely you can't be serious...

I totally disagree. Blazing Saddles is obviously the funniest movie ever. Airplane is a pretender to the throne.

Chocolate is linked to stroke prevention!

Hmmmm, I'm wondering if I can get a perscription for a box of those hazelnut chocolate balls wrapped in gold foil. (My fav's.) I think it could be argued as a legitimate medical expense. And hey, it has nuts! It's a superfood!

    Pratchett has Alzheimer's

Thank you for that. I have a long list of the Discworld books so it's hard to know where to start and how to proceed. My books arrived yesterday and my daughter has already confiscated Mort so I will be starting with the witches this weekend. Darn kids.

    Pratchett has Alzheimer's

I've just ordered the first three books of both the "Death" and "Witches" series. These will be our first Discworld books for us but they sound like something my family will really enjoy. Alzheimers sucks. It steals so much of your life from you before it complete's it's dirty work.

    Current Non-Fiction reads

Gilded Lives, Fatal Voyage: The Titanic's First-Class Passengers and Their World by Hugh Brewster (Author). I really enjoyed this book. It gives you a window not only on the tragedy itself but on the gilded age and the lives of various personalities involved. Brewster brought the names to...

Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror .. Easy to read books

Hi Pax. I would recommend two series/authors to look into. 1. Robert Asprin / Myth series starting with Another Fine Myth 2. Piers Anthony / Xanth series starting with A Spell for Chameleon They are best described as fantasy. I found them very entertaining and I think you would too...
