Eragon by Christopher Paolini (the first in a beginning set of three
someone mentioned the Brian Jaque series (spelling on last name wrong :o )
The Lemnony Snickett series (10 so far)
Garth Nix has many GOOD series out
so on and so forth =)
The Xanth series were some of my favourite. However, he has a lot of good stuff out in the market. My number one fav. series by him is a in a set of seven called the Incarnations of Immortality. I can't remember the order but here are the titles.
On A Pale Horse
With a Tangled Skien...
I've read Stargirl and I thought it was a wonderful book. I teach 5th grade and it actually reminded me of one of my former students... She was a true Stargirl.
Rune, I agree with you on the bigness of the story. At times there was too much going on. Although I was able to keep up, it was almost distracting having that much going on in a book. However, the variety of characters makes up for the hugeness of the story. I found there were many...
Yes, my daughter has made me watch the trailor for it 50,000 times already. I love the way he uses a word and then gives the meaning for that word. Not only are people reading his books, but they are expanding their vocabulary as well.
Halo, Arrrrrrgh!!! I'm a sucker for giving second chances...and third....and fourth which is probably why I've read as many King novels as I've done even tho I'm not a fan. My husband is still trying to get me to read one of the Darktower books. I'll probably end up caving in and trying once...
And if you were referring to anything I said, I don't believe I said it was mandatory reading...it was used as a recreational read aloud and the students had an option to listen or not...they also had a choice as to which book they wished to read. I never stated making it a mandatory read nor...
I can say that I hate reading King's books basically because I do. Most of the books listed were read when I was younger and it was a cool thing to do...read King. I never finished Cujo or Carrie. I read them to see if they were like the movies. I finished The Dead Zone because I actually...
Hmm... it's been awhile since I've read him.
Cujo
Carrie
The Dead Zone (I actually liked that one)
The Stand
Hearts of Atlantis (I think I have the title wrong)
Dreamcatcher
Geralds Game
I think that's about it, although there may have been one or two that I left out.
There are authors I've read when I was younger that I absolutely loved (Piers Anthony, Terry Brooks, David Eddings, etc). Somewhere along the way of getting older I stopped reading books written by those authors....I just didn't care for them. I don't think I"d place them in the hate category...
This list changes as I'm introduced to different authors. One year ago I didn't even know who SE was.
1. George RR Martin
2. Robin Hobb
3. Stephen Donaldson
4. Steven Erikson
5. Anne McCafferty
Honorable Mention: David Eddings and Terry Brooks. I actually liked the Belgraid...
Ashlea, exactly. My daughter was thrilled when I started reading a series she was involved in and we were able to discuss these books as well. Now she wants to try reading the novels that I'm currently reading. Does it mean I'm going to read every book she decides to read? No. Does it mean...
Annoyances
1. Going to post a reply before logging in. My PC for some reason won't save the password for this forum
2. Sitting next to someone that chews with their mouth open. The noise it makes drives me batty.
3. When I'm taking a long road trip I like listening to audio...
Halo, I do teach in the US. Before they hype of whether HP was satanic reading material began, I had no problem reading HP in the classroom. In fact, it was a 5th grade student that suggested I read the first of the series. I read the book in class and some students loved it while some...
My daughter introduced me to the Lemony Snickett series called A Series of Unfortunate Events. They were easy, fast and enjoyable reads. Although they aren't quite fantasy, I'd be more more inclined to place them in this genre. Anyone else read them?
Actually there is a huge campaign to promote recreational reading in the school system. Studies show that children who spend time reading for pleasure tend to build reading comprehension. There is also a study being conducted at the moment concerning the effect that reading alouds have on...
