I remember reading a book about Vietnam called "Better Times Than These." It's written by the same author who wrote Forrest Gump. Pretty good story.
I think "Chickenhawk" was written in the past 25 years. It's not fiction, but its a autobiographical narrative about a helicopter pilot who...
Concerning Brave New World , I think most people believe it to be a Dystopia or Negative Utopia, because it is a society of stability and control where everyone seems generally happy, but unknowingly, they are controlled and conditioned by the government. However, I can see how some people...
Oh...my fault, I thought everyone who reads this thread might have already read AGOT. Doesn't matter I guess, I wasn't really shocked because his character seemed to drift that way, I just didn't know how it would happen. Yeah, should have put that as a spoiler, and from now on I will...
I'm surprised no one has read Rainbow Six. That's the only Clancy I have read and I really enjoyed it. It was really compelling because it felt like it could actually happen.
By the way, if you don't know, Rainbow Six is about an elite counter-terrorism unit that fights international...
Haha, same here. I read it in my teens, even though that was the late 90s. I really enjoyed them though, especially how the majority of his protagonists are females. They're like adventure/action/romance/mystery stories and, like the others said, quite easy reads.
For those who have read...
Probably the greatest Sci-Fi book I have read...EVER. Never really got into the other books but read this one like 3 times and always enjoyed reading it. I know Dune is also considered a classic, but I haven't got into that either.
I just really enjoyed the way the story was written...
Yeah, no doubt about it the Prince is horrible, and Martin is supposed to make him horrible, since we never get a POV (Point of View) from Joffrey's character. So, every other character that talks about Joffrey hates him, so in turn, we hate him.
But I don't think it was Martin's intent to...
A Cricket in Times Square by George Selden. It's the only book I still remember enjoying reading. I also read some enid blyton and hardy boys but never really got into those.
The Archer's Tale by Bernard Cornwell.
I found it alright, had me gripped most of the time, but felt kind of short. I guess that's why it is a trilogy. Good read though, but I think I'll get A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin and read that, my mind still in the world of Westeros and not...
It's funny you mentioned that because my father DID read that book when he was in college, and that's the only book he talks about when it comes to anything he's read. But, I'm pretty sure he won't want to read it again. I think he would throw it away after the first chapter, from what I've...
Thanks a lot for the ideas everyone. I guess I should get him a collection of short stories, since it would be easier on him to read it. I'll look through those books you guys selected and see which one is right for him.
This thread can be used for anyone who wants their family member or...
I wasn't sure if I should put this in Suggestions or this forum, but anyways, I have a dilemma. I want to get my father back into reading by buying him a book on his upcoming birthday.
The thing is he hasn't read a book of any kind for more than 2 decades, and he's afraid of starting over...
No doubt about it that the Godfather had some of the greatest scenes of cinema history ever, but if I were to choose just one, it would have to be the end when Kate leaves Michael Corleone's room, and the camera puts her in the left side, and on the right, you can look into the room with Michael...
Hi all, I'm new to The Book Forum, and to start off, I was wondering if anyone has read the new Steven Pressfield book The Virtues of War ? I did a search for it and found nothing on this website, so I thought I'd create a new thread.
I just finished reading it and was simply amazed by...
I think you are talking about Paradise Lost by John Milton.
It's about Lucifer the angel who becomes Lucifer, Satan ( I think). But, it's not a novel, it's an epic poem, so we might be talking about a different book. Anyways, hope that helped.
