Most of the books we read in HS I enjoyed. Some of my favorites were:
Of Mice and Men
Tale of Two Cities
1984
Animal Farm
To Kill a Mockingbird
Catcher in the Rye
I can only think of one book I hated, which was Far from the Madding (sp?)Crowd. I'm not even sure why I hated it since...
I bought "The Passion of Artesimia" by Susan Vreeland yesterday. Barnes & Noble was having a pretty decent sale, but unfortunately that's all I could find. I enjoyed her book 'Girl in Hyacinth Blue,' and was curious to see what this one was all about.
I only went to 2 concerts this year , but they were both to see Audioslave, and I was in heaven at the time. No plans yet for '06 since the holiday's took so much funding, but hopefully it'll be Audioslave again and Red Hot Chili Peppers, who I have been waiting for forever!
The Dante Club is one of my favorites. We saw Matthew Pearl speak a couple of years ago and just hearing him talk about the research he had to do for that book was amazing. I'm signed up for his email updates, and received one the other day where he talked about his new book "The Poe Shadow."...
What, Minniemal, you can't drive out to a library in the burbs?! :p Besides, one day while I was in college I was there and saw a bum sprawled out under a table and everyone was just standing there staring at him.
When I first saw this thread I was thinking about a library that you have in...
Nancy, are you enjoying The Portrait? Iain Pears is one of my favorite authors, and I liked that one. VERY different, a style of writing I had never read before, in fact. His favorite of mine is Dream of Scipio, but I also loved Instance of the Fingerpost. I also must say I enjoy his little...
Just finished reading 'The Third Secret' for book club. Yuck! I found the subject matter (the Vatican, the Pope, Conclave) to be interesting, but I grew to dislike the book by the last few chapters. One word to describe my reaction: disappointment.
Here are my favorites in no particular order. I'll probably be back to add to it, since I have so many I don't think I could remember them all.
Buffalo 66
Magnolia
The Big Lebowski
Bottle Rocket
American Movie
Smoke Signals
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Waiting for Guffman
The Usual...
I haven't been to the movie theatre in ages! I used to go all the time, but for some reason lately I've become a slacker. The last movie I saw was 'Crash.' Loved it - very much reminded me of Traffic and Magnolia.
The last movie I saw at home was this weekend. Last night a friend and I...
I only discovered the West Wing during season 6, so now I am keeping myself busy watching the DVD's I bought and reruns on Bravo to catch up. Needless to say, even though the idiots at NBC moved the show to Sunday night, I'm a very faithful viewer! I also watch CSI: Las Vegas. Not new, but...
I remember watching Thundercats and the Wonder Twins. I think one was water and one was fire. Or was it wind? Gosh I can't remember. "Wonder Twin powers, activate!" LOL
Moreso than the cartoons in the 80's, I think my favorite shows were the Kroftt (sp?) Super Stars. Does anyone...
Went to a library book sale today, but the pickings were pretty dismal. I picked up:
'A Noble Radiance' by Donna Leon
'A Separate Peace' by John Knowles
'The Boy's Tale' by Margaret Frazer
This is the second Leon novel I've picked up, but they are on my TBR pile. Amazingly enough...
He was a guy who had a TV show here in the US. He would show you how to paint and would pretty much finish a whole painting per show. I used to love to watch him when I was young :o
He always used to say things like "...I think we'll paint a happy little tree right here..." or "...here's a...
I've not read a lot of non-fiction, but I'm hoping to broaden my horizons :)
I did read and LOVED Toby Young's book 'How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.' I read it quite a few years ago, but from what I remember he was a writer in England who came to NYC to write for Vanity Fair. Lots...
I recently finished 'Citizen Girl' by the 2 authors who wrote 'The Nanny Diaries' (sorry I don't feel like looking up their names right now). I felt like something light before I jumped into The Third Secret.
I thought their first novel (Diaries) was much better. The plot in this one was...
My favorite King as well. I could read it over and over again. I can't even watch the film, since I love the book so much - seeing the film just makes me sad.
I'm almost finished with 'The Third Secret' by Steve Berry. I really liked it up until about the last 1/4. I find things like the...
Thanks for the welcome, all! StillILearn, I stole my name from a ranch we drove by one night in Anza, Ca. I thought it was so neat that I've used it ever since!
Anyone have a good suggestion for an avatar site? I'm at a loss at what to choose. Where did you guys get yours?
Hi everyone-
Just thought I'd jump in and say hi. My name's Marcia and I live in Minneapolis, MN. I'm grateful to have found a site like this - everyone seems nice and welcoming too :)
I'm in the midst of reading 'The Third Secret' for the book club I'm in with some of my co-workers...
