    Question for the Brits

I think officially it should be 1 April 2004. But that's in a letter, etc. If I said it I'm in agreement with the Scouser and the Geordie :)

    Currently Reading

Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut. Don't know how it's taken this long and halfway through I really wish I'd made the effort earlier. Still, sometimes you're just not ready for a book 'til later...

    Best opening Scene/Sentence/Word?

'And The Ass Saw The Angel' by Nick Cave: 'Three greasy brother crows wheel, beak to heel, cutting a circle into the bruised and troubled sky, making fast, dark rings through the thicksome bloats of smoke.' Marvellous.

    Ancient Greek and Roman books?

IMHO the great thing about Hamlet is that Shakespeare takes the framework of the revenge tragedy and places a self-doubting, procrastinating thinker at the centre. I find this far more interesting than the bog-standard escalating body count revenge story (see Kill Bill). After all, where's the...

    Ancient Greek and Roman books?

Anyone else out there desperately trying to get the Iliad finished off before Hollywood comes along and steamrollers over it with Troy?

    Ancient Greek and Roman books?

Best book I've read as an intro to classical Greece is: The Greeks by H.D.F. Kitto It is scholarly, witty, wise and highly entertaining. Can't recommend it enough. Also of interest on specific areas of Greek life: Courtesans & Fishcakes - James Davidson Alexander the Great - Robin...

    James Jones

    Guess that's a 'no' then...

has there been any movie that was......

Agree about Fight Club. Book was very good - film was outstanding. Haven't read The Shining, but didn't think the film was at all scary. Blade Runner is much better than Do Androids Dream... Die Hard is possibly the greatest action film of all time and based on a fairly average book...

    Mary Doria Russell

Just read it recently myself on a friend's recommendation. Not sure if 'enjoyed' is the right word but I was fairly engrossed by it. The subject matter was a little too disturbing - the whole idea that the mission seemed to be ordained by God and then the awful way things turn out...

    James Jones

Hi. Would be interested in discussing the works of James Jones. Specifically From Here to Eternity, The Thin Red Line, Whistle and Some Came Running ('cause they're the ones I've read...). Look forward to hearing from you all out there.

    Now Reading

Just finished my annual trawl through The Question#1-18. For some people it's Lord of the Rings or The Bible, for me it's a very '80s Denny O'Neill reinterpretation of a Steve Ditko character. Zen and the art of vigilanteism, or something like that...

    Daredevil

Although very easy on the eye, Jennifer Garner just doesn't quite have the chops to play Elektra as the full-on nutcase she actually is. Admittedly the character was radically altered from the comics anyway (well, Miller's version at least). It wasn't a total waste though - Jon Favreau was...

    Favorite Comic Book Character

Off the top of my head and in no particular order, I'd say: The Question Cerebus Frank Reid Fleming, World's Toughest Milkman Archer & Armstrong Been reading Cerebus for 10 years now with only one more to go but I've kind of lost interest. Still buying it but never seem to have the...

    Daredevil

Sorry Tobytook but it looks like DD's success stateside means we're in for a sequel AND an Elektra spin-off film. Hopefully Mark Steven Johnson won't be involved in any capacity as IMHO I thought he handled the material terribly. All flashy editing and inappropriate rock soundtrack. Both DD...
