    Gay marriage

    Wow. What a joke.

    Gay marriage

. Yes, but there is a seperation of church and state. Church is not state, and thus cannot be forced to anything or make anything equal. But I agree that if they want to, they should be allowed to. Of course, making that decision will make them independent in nearly all cases and cause them...

Sarkozy or Royal? The French election

The election and Sarkozy winning the election has probably been my favorite international news story all year. Great fun to watch and very happy for France's future that he won.

    Scottish independence

I'm at the end of 6-7 months living in Scotland. The thing is, if you look up any solid economic study, Scotland without the UK will go into poverty. They take much more than they give in terms of money to Britain (they sustain their socialism via money from England), they'd almost definitely...

    Wanted:New Reads Needed

If you're looking for a Potter-ish book, have you read Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy yet? That's what I'm doing now in anticipation of HP7.

Thomas L. Friedman: The World is Flat (Expanded/Revised ed.)

Just got this to read on my upcoming time off. Anyone read it yet? General thoughts? The dust cover and amazon.com both failed to excite me and I was planning on some other books, but from skimming the pages themselves, this seems like it could be really phenomenal.

    Sicko by Michael Moore

Moore It's not one-sided though. I'm friends with plenty of dems and liberals (hell, I am one in many ways) and they don't say anything like him. Why? Because he's lying. Unfairenheit 9/11: The lies of Michael Moore. by Christopher Hitchens Bowling for Columbine: Documentary or Fiction? by...

    American Politics

I don't think there's just a 'book' about the entire subject. Try to find some things about pluralism by Ron Dahl, maybe read the Federalist Papers, though sadly that's more idealistic than realistic these days. for a broad view, you'll have to get a textbook of some sort, really. I'm sure...

    Philip Pullman: His Dark Materials

I'm literally in the middle of it now. I really enjoyed the first book and the second is quite good as well. Probably finish the series by this week. I picked it up as part of my anticipation for the final Potter book. It's good, but so far I don't really see it as being better than Potter and...

    Book from my youth

I used to read this one book constantly but haven't ever been able to remember it as it's probably been 15 years. My details are awful so nobody else will likely know, but it's worth a shot. It's about a boy in Japan, going through some sort of growing pain or other, and his passion is baseball...

    News story - Burning books

Seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Favorite fiction and nonfiction sports books

Yeah, I'd get it. It's not near as good as the first but it's still really worth picking up if you enjoyed the previous. I heard mixed reviews abuot the 3rd one he wrote, that just came out, and haven't picked it up yet.

    educational podcasts?

The ones I love are 'In Our Time' from BBC Radio 4 and 'Radio Lab' from WNYC (I think). There are some others, but those 2 are the tops, especially the BBC offering, which I don't think has ever had a dull or bad episode.

    Sicko by Michael Moore

Almost all of his films are 'incredibly bad'. He fills them with lies, distortions, half-truths, mistruths, propaganda, etc. He's a great filmmaker, all of his films are quite watchable, but the 'information' in them is majority junk and flat out lying for the sake of making people he doesn't...

    Elizabeth Kostova: The Historian

I tend to hate vampire books but I loved this. From page 50 to about 250, it can be a bit slow, but after that it really picks up steam and I couldn't put it down at all. I keep trying to see what Kostova is writing about next but I can't find anything. Does anyone know?

    Cormac McCarthy

Not surprising, the guy is trendy lately. Personally, I loved The Road, hated Blood Meridian and can't even finish it, and haven't read anything else.

Favorite fiction and nonfiction sports books

Favorite non-fiction is probably 'Have a Nice Day' by Mick Foley. Just an amazing autobiography by a really interesting, smart and funny guy.

    Books you didn't finish

I didn't finish 'Choke' by Palahniuk a few years ago. It wasn't awful, so I'm not sure why. Just got caught up elsewhere. Most recently, I keep trying and trying and trying to finish Blood Meridian but just can't. I absolutely hate the way it's written. I picked it up because I loved The...

    Good place to buy books?

I always go with Amazon or the local used book shops. As for the B&N price, try living the UK, the prices here are entirely laughable. £8 for a new book which is $16... and that's just paperback. Even going to the charity shops for used books and paying £2 feels ridiculous to me. A return to...

What do you use as a bookmark?

I have this little metal clasp shaped like an arrow that says 'Hold that thought'. I also like conventional bookmarks and run through a lot of different ones that it would be pointless to list through. Custom made ones are the best, especially if there's any artistic talent involved (which I...
