1001 books you must read before you die.

It is a really cool book. Totally worth it. OR, you could get an English degree and irishclover will just give you one.
 
After comparing the previous and current lists, it seems that their pace of change will rapidly leave one in the dust unless one can read about 315 books every two years, just to keep up with the added titles and stay ahead of the deletions. Trying to catch up with goal posts that move that far and that fast is just too much for me, so I have pretty much lapsed back to just keeping cumulative track of the books I have read, and have abandoned hope of using the list(s) as a checklist. For me, the lists have simply become one more source of suggestions for reading. And since they don't include all of my reading, anyway, they really are only a source for suggestions.
On the other hand, the new list has a much more international flavor, so is quite worthwhile for branching out one's reading in that direction when one is so inclined. I've picked out about 20 interesting new titles by international authors that I'll get around to some day, so the lists are definitely valuable in their way.
For those interested, my count is currently about 130, of which about 20 were marked for deletion in the new list.
 
Peder, will cutting down the list to half help you? :D There's another book called 501 Must Read Books, and looks interesting as well.

I wonder how different the two are, although there must be a substantial overlap.

I've already discarded the 700 or so authors/books I've never heard of, and formed my own list of 300 from the remaining ones. Of that list (and the other also, of course) I have read about 130, leaving only 170 to go. But I can tell you, that even a list of 'only' 300 books looks like a humongous number when it is all in one place!

Thanks for the 500. I'll definitely look at it to see what I can pick up from there.

I've read 51 of those books, with at least 120 on my TBR list.

But I'm not ashamed of that score, I'll read what I like when I like and since I'm only 18 I think I've got a long enough time to make my way through the books that I actually want to read. The list is all a bit too samey for me anyway. The same authors keep popping up over and over again and I tend to read a more widespread lot than just one or two authors. I too am doing an English degree, so some of these were for class, but others were completely my choice. :)

My difficulty with the 1001 list was exactly the reverse. There were way too many authors represented, and mostly none that I reccognized. The 300 or so different ones I have for my shorter list at least have some vague familiarity for me. If it is different authors you are looking for then I think the long list is actually one good place to look. But, just my opinion. :flowers:
