Dialects

Isn't it a little cut-through pedestrian path between houses? I know that's what my ma-in-law in Linconshire calls the one near her. It's a sort of hidden shortcut.

Spot on, Novella! :) Consider yourself an honorary Yorkshire person (whether you want to be or not :D )

Somewhat related to the topic, and to Abu's complete Jibberish posted above; I had to give up on a book for the second time in my life. I was reading Irvine Welsh's Porno, and I was really enjoying it, too, until two characters were introduced (for the fans: Spud and Begbie) who talk in a dialect so thick I needed a samurai sword to cut myself a way through it.

It took me so long to finish a page of this stuff that it sucked the fun right out of the book.

I hate quitting.

Cheers

I'd never read anything by mr. Welsh, but I loved the film Trainspotting, so I figured I'd give Porno a try.

Reading, for me, will always be about having fun, not about hard work.

So, movin' on.

Cheers

I had a friend who kept trying to loan me Trainspotting, so I picked it up at his house and read the first page, then asked, "Is it all like this?" and he said, "If you mean in incomprehensible Scottish dialect, yes." so I left it there. I love the Scottish accent, but not if I have to read the written version.

I was the same, I couldn't get to grips with the book though I did enjoy the film :)

Such a pity :-( Trainspotting is a fantastic book - still his best by far. I can only urge you to persevere.

Maybe people who can understand it can make up an online Trainspotting glossary/FAQ. I'd be willing to help on it.
