Wow, I haven't seen any of the ones nominated for best pic. I do want to check out Slumdog, as it just hit theaters here this week. I also want to check out The Wrestler, which has yet to appear around here. I can't believe they didn't nominate Springsteen's song for that one, he's usually the academy's darling.

I loved Encounters at the End of the World. I would love to see Herzog win this, just to see him get up and talk to the world. I've heard good things about Man on Wire, which I just got in from netflix, it's supposedly a shoe in for best doc.

Huh. I'd managed to miss that Herzog was nominated. That's his first Oscar nomination ever, isn't it? Which is a bit of a joke, but... better late than never.

The only one of the Best Motion Picture nominees I've seen so far is Slumdog Millionaire, which I thought was very good though not flawless - :star4: . I'm kind of hoping Frost/Nixon or Milk don't win it, though; I'm sure they're good films, but enough with the biopics already. I always thought I'm Not There should have been the last word on that.

Another academy darling that didn't get nominated was Eastwood for either directing or acting for Gran Torino, which I did see. I didn't like it that much but I thought it was just as good as Million Dollar Baby which won it all.

I've seen Benjamin Button and Milk. Both are good films, but i'd say "The wrestler" and "The dark knight" deserved a best picture nominee more than either of them.

"Let the right one in" should have been nominated for best foreign language film too.

"Let the right one in" should have been nominated for best foreign language film too.

Problem is that the tiny little foreign language category (what's that about the Nobel prize being insular?) still depends on what movies the individual countries submit to the academy. And the Swedes never submitted LTROI.

I wouldn't have complained about a "best adapted screenplay" nod, though.

Yes, believe it or not, this is his first oscar nom.
Was Gran Torino eligible, though? It came pretty late in the year, didn't it?
It came out in a limited release back at the beginning of December, but didn't go wide until January, so it was eligible.

Just watched Man on Wire and it was great.

I was surprised to see The Reader get a Best Picture nod. Kate Winslet's performance seems to be getting higher marks than the film itself. If I had my way, I would have taken this out of the competition and replaced it with The Dark Knight.

When Kate Winslet played herself on Extras, she joked all you had to do to win a film award was do a holocaust film or play a mentally disabled person.

Was there a German version made of The Reader? I could swear I have seen this movie but with other actors.

I also liked Million Dollar Baby,as much as Gran Torino. He grunted more in the latter, lol

The only movies I have seen on the list are The Dark Knight and Tropic Thunder. I think that The Dark Knight is majorly awesome! :)

I have seen:
Tropic Thunder
The Dark Knight
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Wanted
WALL-E
Iron Man
Kung Fu Panda
Gran Torino

And here is a small part of his growl/snarling quick witted mouth.(I think grunt WAS the wrong word Lenny:whistling:)

Walt Kowalski: Relax zipperhead. I'm not gonna shoot you. I'd look down too, if I was you. You know, I knew you were a dipshit the first time I ever saw you. Then I thought you were worse with women than stealing cars... toad

Thao Vang Lor: It's Thao

Walt Kowalski: What?

Thao Vang Lor: It's not toad, my name is Thao

Walt Kowalski: Yeah well you are blowing it with that girl who was there. Not that I give two shits about a toad like you

Thao Vang Lor: You don't know what you are talking about

Walt Kowalski: You're wrong eggroll, I know exactly what I'm talking about. I may not be the most pleasant person to be around, but I got the best woman who was ever on this planet to marry me. I worked at it, it was the best thing ever happened to me. Hands down. But you, you know, you're letting Click-Clack, Ding-Dong and Charlie Chan, just walk out with miss "what's her face". She likes you, you know? Though I don't know why!

Thao Vang Lor: who?
Walt Kowalski: Yum Yum. You know the girl in the purple sweater. She's been looking at you all day, stupid!

Thao Vang Lor: You mean Youa?

Walt Kowalski: Yeah... yum yum... yeah... nice girl... nice girl, very charming girl... I talked with her... yeah But you, you just let her walk out right out with the 3 stooges. And you know why? 'cause you're a big fat p****. Well. I gotta go. Good day p****cake. ....:D

I did learn a lot of new ethnic slurs from this movie. I don't remember what the P word was in that last line, could you spell it out for me?

:p
