What was the best new years you have had?[/QUOTE]

The most memorable New Years was the one where dh and I were first dating seriously (long, long story there) and we'd gone to see The Black Hole(terrrible movie), then went to his friend Mike's house for a party. I'd always wanted to meet this guy because his last name was the same as my mom's maiden name and everyone else I knew with the name was blood-related..On meeting Mike's folks and comparing family stories, we decided that we WERE related and from then on we called eachother cousins. Anyway, this party was fun and we had a good time, but left shortly after midnight in search of a place to eat. Stupid us, we forgot it was a major holiday, and every place was packed. We finally settled on this one place, and waited in line for over an hour. Then we waited for the waitress to get to us to take our order. Then we waited and waited and..finally she brought our food...and dropped mine on the floor! By the time we got back to my house it was nearly 4 am, and I was telling my sweetheart that at least we'd be in when my mom woke up at 4..but I forgot she set her alarm ahead of 4 so she'd have plenty of time to get to work by 5..she was just getting up when we walked in. When we told her about the evening, she said, "Well I can see you weren't out getting drunk, so it's ok that you were so late."
My dh went on to write one original song, and perverted a John Denver song to commerate some of the events of that New Years Eve. Oh, and the next day, he came over in his dad's Model T car and we went through the dirive through window at Burger King:D

What are some of your favorite Christmas songs?

Traditional songs: Silent Night; 12 Days of Christmas (the muppets version is great :D); Little Drummer Boy.

Non-traditional songs: Baby, Please Come Home - U2; There's an orchestral song with lots of strings, very up-beat tempo, but I've no idea what it's called. I hear it every year and ask someone, but haven't been able to find out the name of it. It's used in so many christmas movies - Home Alone in particular, I believe.

What's the most embarassing gift you have ever opened under the tree in front of family and friends?

(Mine was receiving a sexy negligee from an older aunt and having to hold it up in front of me to "see if it fit" in front of my extended family when I was just 15!!)

Years ago my father-in-law bought underwear for all of his sisters and daughters (I have no idea why). He has a sister named "Joy" and on the tag, it looked just like "Jay" (my name) so the gift ended up in my pile. So I was given her gift and opened it much to the delight of the rest of my wife's family. The moral? Write legibly.

Where's your favorite place to be during the holidays?

At our holiday house by the sea, reading under the large willow tree that we have there. I'm not sure if I'm going to be going this year, though :(

What are you doing for the holidays?

Making espresso drinks for holiday guests (they invited my espresso machine over for the holidays, knowing I would tag along).

Want some [espresso]?

We usually put up our tree about 10 to 14 days before Christmas. We make a fun trip in getting a tree and drive way up into the mountains in West Virginia to cut one from a Tree Farm in a very remote area. It is about a two and a half hour drive to the tree farm.

Do you put up a "real" tree or one of the fake trees. :)

A real tree all the way! After the season is over, we can savor the experience for weeks as we discover those elusive pine needles that evaded the vaccum cleaner the previous dozen times!

Any chance of having a white Christmas in your neck of the woods, and would that be a good thing or a bad thing?

It usually happens, though it's very mild this year, so there's a reduced chance. It'd be a nice thing, but I'm happy either way. We get so much snow in January and February around here that I'm content for the weather to stay mild a little longer. It's probably because I'm not traditionally used to white christmases. Give me beating heat and air conditioners!

When do you open your presents?

I open the presents from my parents and siblings as soon as I get up on Christmas Day, and then the presents from my extended family when I go to have Christmas lunch at my grandparents' house.

What do you usually have for Christmas lunch/tea?

Well ususally not too much, since I'm already stuffed from the various coffee cakes, cookies, banana breads, and such that I've consumed already that morning. But in the past my dad has made things that can just be scooped onto plates and then taken somewhere else (my dining room table isn't big enough for my whole extended family). Vegetable barley bake (a casserole-like dish) was a big hit one year. My aunt made two or three different kinds of quiche another year. Mmmmm.

Do you regularly get a particular type of gift that people *think* you like, but you actually don't? And if so what is it?

No, usually people are spot on (books, clothes or boardgames)

What is your favourite present that you have ever recieved?

I don't have one. I am usually disappointed with what I think I want.

What was your favorite gift to receive?

A bike when I was 7 - it had tiny raindeer on the handlebars and cemented my gullability towards Mr Claus for a few more years!

Where has leckert been??!!

leckert has been up to his proverbial eyeballs in alligators.

or has it been up to his eyeballs in proverbial alligators?

(not back a full day, and already talking in third person!)

either way, I have recently been promoted, and, simultaneously, started a little side venture, and am working my patooty off. usually until at least 6pm at the office, then until 11pm or so at home.

thanks for noticing, Kooky!

my question:

When are ya gonna sport that sexy raincoat I made for you?

All in good time, my friend. I'm rather run off my feet at the moment too. TBF is my procrastination material, but I don't have a lot of time to devote right now. I missed out of my Hallowe'en costume, unfortunatley, but I have other plans for that :D.

Being little again and getting excited - and I mean *excited* - about Christmas. Those times were great.

Has Christmas become to commercialised and materialistic?
