Songs Stuck In Your Head

As I've been following the story of the WV mining accident, this song keeps popping into my head. It's been recorded by lots of great singers, but the one on my media player is done by Vince Gill and The Chieftains.

Dark as the Dungeon
Come and listen, young fellers, so young and so fine
And seek not your fortune in the dark dreary mines
It will form as a habit and seep in your soul
'Til the stream of your blood runs as black as the coal

Where it's dark as a dungeon and damp as the dew
Where the dangers are double and the pleasures are few
Where the rain never falls and the sun never shines
It's dark as a dungeon way down in the mines

There's many a man who I've known in my day
Who lived just to labor his whole life away
Like a fiend with his dope or a drunkard his wine
A man will have lust for the lure of the mines

Well I hope when I'm gone and the ages shall roll
My body will blacken and turn into coal
Then I'll look from the door of my heavenly home
And pity the miner that's digging my bones

I keep hearing the song by John Fogerty ......Down On The Corner.
Subsequently, I put a hold on the CD at the Library by Fogerty titled Long Road Home that features these songs:

Born on the Bayou -- Bad moon rising -- Centerfield -- Who'll stop the rain -- Rambunctious boy -- Fortunate son -- Lookin' out my back door -- Up around the bend -- Almost Saturday night -- Down on the corner -- Bootleg -- Have you ever seen the rain? -- Sweet hitch-hiker -- Hey tonight -- The old man down the road -- Rockin all over the world -- Lodi -- Keep on chooglin' -- Green River -- Déjà vu -- Run through the jungle -- Hot rod heart -- Travelin' band -- Proud Mary -- Fortunate son.

I love CCR! My favorite song is probably Bad Moon Rising..although thanks to a certain local dj, I can't hear it without changing the lyrics in the chorus at least once, and singing "there's a bathroom on the right!"

Another song written by Merle Travis and sung by the great Tennessee Ernie Ford:

Some people say a man is made outta mud
A poor man's made outta muscle and blood
Muscle and blood and skin and bones
A mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I loaded sixteen tons of number nine coal
And the straw boss said "Well, a-bless my soul"

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin', it was drizzlin' rain
Fightin' and trouble are my middle name
I was raised in the canebrake by an ol' mama lion
Cain't no-a high-toned woman make me walk the line

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

If you see me comin', better step aside
A lotta men didn't, a lotta men died
One fist of iron, the other of steel
If the right one don't a-get you
Then the left one will

You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

Salt N Pepa's "Push it"

"ooh baby baby! yeah baby baby!
ooh baby baby! yeah baby baby!"

...and then the beat. aghhh!!!

also Black Eyed Peas

"my hump my hump, my lovely lady lumps" *shivers*

So bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

The Kaiser Chiefs' song "Oh My God" is stuck in my head. I like it but it's starting to annoy me now.

Since I just heard this on the radio a few minutes ago:
Oklahoma Hills
Words and Music by Woody Guthrie and Jack Guthrie

Many a month has come and gone
Since I've wandered from my home
In those Oklahoma hills
Where I was born

Many a page of my life has turned
Many lessons I have learned
And I feel like in those hills
Where I belong

CHORUS:
Way down yonder in the Indian nation
Ridin' my pony on the reservation
In the Oklahoma hills where I was born

Way down yonder in the Indian nation
A cowboy's life is my occupation
In the Oklahoma Hills where I was born

But as I sit here today
Many mile's I am away
From the place I rode my pony
Through the draw

Where the oak and black-jack trees
Kiss the playful prairie breeze
And I feel back in those hills
Where I belong

CHORUS

Now as I turn life a page
To the land of the great Osage
In those Oklahoma hills
Where I was born

Where the black oil rolls and flows
And the snow white cotton grows
And I feel like in those hills
Where I belong

CHORUS

Now I'm in a western swing mood..I might have to dig up my ancien Hank Thompson album when I get home from the library!

Wow ABC, i haven't thought of that song for ages. Now I will have to do some digging. Maybe I will play some Asleep At The Wheel music.

I said "Hello Mary Lou
Goodbye heart
Sweet Mary Lou
I'm so in love with you
I knew Mary Lou
We'd never part
So Hello Mary Lou
Goodbye heart"

By the most underated Ricky Nelson. John Fogerty has stated that Ricky was one of the great Rock "N" Roll singers.

I think that "The Legendary Songs Of Don McLean" has become my favorite music CD. His version of "Crying" will give you chills up and down your spine.

I was all right for a while
I could smile for a while
then I saw you last night
you held my hand so tight
when you stopped to say hello
then you wished me well, you couldnt tell that Id been

Crying over you
Crying over you
then you said so long
left me standing all alone
alone and crying
crying, crying, crying
its hard to understand
that the touch of your hand
can start me crying

I thought that I was over you
but its true, oh so true
I love you even more than I did before
but darling, what can I do?
oh you dont love me
and Ill always be

Crying over you
Crying over you
yes, now youre gone
and from this moment on
Ill be crying, crying
crying, crying
Im crying, crying
over you

Poor Little Fool by Ricky Nelson

I used to play around with hearts that hastened at my call,
But when I met that little girl I knew that I would fall.

Poor little fool, oh yeah, I was a fool, uh huh..

She played around and teased me with her carefree devil eyes,
She'd hold me close and kiss me but her heart was full of lies.

Poor little fool, oh yeah, I was a fool, uh huh..

She told me how she cared for me and that we'd never part,
And so for the very first time I gave away my heart.

Poor little fool, oh yeah, I was a fool, uh huh..

The next day she was gone and I knew she'd lied to me,
She left me with a broken heart and won her victory.

Poor little fool, oh yeah, I was a fool, uh huh..

I'd played this game with other hearts but I never thought I'd see,
The day that someone else would play love's foolish game with me.

Poor little fool, oh yeah, I was a fool, uh huh..

Everyday it's a-gettin' closer
Goin' faster than a rollercoaster
Love like yours will surely come my way
A-hey, a-hey-hey

Everyday it's a-gettin' faster
Everyone said, "Go ahead and ask her"
Love like yours will surely come my way
A-hey, a-hey-hey

Everyday seems a little longer
Every way love's a little stronger
Come what may
Do you ever long for true love from me

Everyday it's a-gettin' closer
Goin' faster than a rollercoaster
Love like yours will surely come my way
A-hey, a-hey-hey

Everyday seems a little longer
Every way love's a little stronger
Come what may
Do you ever long for true love from me

Everyday it's a-gettin' closer
Goin' faster than a rollercoaster
Love like yours will surely come my way
A-hey, a-hey-hey
Love like yours will surely come my way

Sunday evening I went downstairs to look for a book and discovered that one of my dear darling urchins had broken by favorite Connie Smith 45:( Since it was a very obscure single, I can't easily replace the song..so this is going through my head:

Dallas, I'll be comin' home
It won't be very long
Don't let them close your roads
Til I get back
Dallas I'll be coming home to you

You couldn't understand that night
Why I packed up and left
You knew I wouldn't find it
Way out here
These city lights of Tulsa
Make me lonesome for you Dallas
Dallas I'll be coming home to you

Please take care of by baby
Boy, you know I love him Dallas
I wouldn't leave him with anyone but you
The plane leaves in the morning
And it's headin straight to Dallas
Dallas I'll be comin home to you.

It's been awhile since I heard the song. Looks like it will even longer before I hear it again:(

I'm in an ABBA mood:

Can you hear the drums fernando?
I remember long ago another starry night like this
In the firelight fernando
You were humming to yourself and softly strumming your guitar
I could hear the distant drums
And sounds of bugle calls were coming from afar

They were closer now fernando
Every hour every minute seemed to last eternally
I was so afraid fernando
We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die
And I’m not ashamed to say
The roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry

There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, fernando
Though I never thought that we could lose
There’s no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, fernando

Now we’re old and grey fernando
And since many years I haven’t seen a rifle in your hand
Can you hear the drums fernando?
Do you still recall the frightful night we crossed the rio grande?
I can see it in your eyes
How proud you were to fight for freedom in this land

There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, fernando
Though I never thought that we could lose
There’s no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, fernando

There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, fernando
Though I never thought that we could lose
There’s no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, fernando
Yes, if I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, fernando...

almost makes me want to dig out my 45's..

Hey, at least it's edifying!! If you have to have an earworm, Power in the Blood is a goodie:D When I get hymns stuck in my head, it's usually Be Thou My Vision or The Ninety and Nine..

One of the more frightening things I have heard on TBF. :)

That stupid song from "Driveshaft" on Lost is burning into my skull.
"You all everybody" over and over again.
Maybe even ABBA would be an upgrade. Then again . . .
