I don't know if this was already done before (it's rather popular), but I really liked Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes.

From the description on Amazon, it sounds very sad. I would really like to read this, but I'll have to follow it up with something uplifting or risk being left in a funk.

It is very sad, but I really like it and I would suggest following it up with a funny and uplifting read. ^_^ Not good to be too depressed.
