Where would you grow your money?

Let's say you've landed yourself a million bucks. How would you grow your money? Invest in property? Buy mutual funds, stocks, bonds? Build a business? Just chuck it in your savings account?

Or just put it under your pillow?

Just interested to know what your investment strategies are...

Being has how I'm getting more conservative in my old age...

First - pay off my house, my car, and my old medical debts. (Believe me when I tell you that this will put a MAJOR dent in the amount. Sigh).

Second -- set up a trust fund for my son and another for my parents.

After that, keep slogging along writing my (potentially best selling :D [I'm thinking positive]) books and working in the office until I get the SECOND and THIRD millions, at which point I'm thinking travel, investment, and a little rest.

Pretty boring, hunh.

I would buy an island with some caves and go and live on it. On my own. Maybe I'd get the internet out there, so I could at least find someone to play scrabble against. I'd keep goats on my island and I'd also set up my own little micro brewery, where I'd produce a 'unique' ale to trade with a nearby island, for essential goat supplies and chocolate and stuff. I'd get around to writing a few books, 'Memoirs of a Retired Beer Tester,' and maybe, 'The Bearded Lady and her Island.'

First I'd send some money to my family in the Philippines so they can make some improvements to our province and then my family and I, here in America, would establish a cute little internation restaurant.

hmm... lots of you send your money back home... that's very nice of you. maey, don't you want to invest in property in manila, for your family if not for yourself?

mort - are the bond rates above inflation rates though?

Cie - when you get your second, third (and even more!) million, what sort of investments are you thinking about?

Doesn't anyone here invest in shares? Stocks? You know, Wall Street and stuff?

Though I highly doubt anyone would sell you an island for a measly million, I'd be more than glad to read your books. Your _The Bearded Lady and her Island_ sounds like a rollicking good thriller romance.

I definitely wouldn't invest it because I'm thoroughly irresponsible. I'd spend it on me and my friends to make us all happy. And I'd travel around the world and probably die of alcohol poisoning.

Yeh I did wonder briefly how much islands cost. Maybe I could spend the money on plastic surgery, in order to bag me a very rich old chap, then when he pops his clogs I can move to the island. The only downside is they've invented Viagra now haven't they? *shudder* Aaah the things I'll do for my island life.

Oooh Billy O, on your travels you could come to my island and try my beer. Then when you die I'll cast you out to sea.

It's going to be strong beer then? Strong enough to finish me off?
I intend to make my self inflicted death from alcohol poisoning take as long as possible - I've spent 30 years so far building up an immunity.

This one is called Lovers Island and is in the Phillipines. It costs 20,000 dollars.

First off I would pay off all my debts and renovate my house. Then I would invest in ME. I would send myself to university to learn how to manage the large amount of money remaining (I don't have much debt and my house isn't large). I would put some money into property, some into stocks and bonds and the like, so I could grow my money for me to live on without having to work, some into trusts for my children, give some to charity, then spend the rest!

Hmmmmm

Ok, now that I've moved into multiple millions territory, my family is provided for....

Let's see -- a little real estate investment. Hmnn, Lover's Island looks quite nice. But it almost REQUIRES a cabana boy toy type (but will he sign a pre-nup? Do I even CARE? :D )

Charitable contributions -- and not just for tax purposes. I believe in spreading wealth around. You can't take it with you, so make the best use of it here. Which is why I wouldn't be buying huge mansions (for just me and the cats? Nah.) or ridiculously expensive cars. I'd rather have a modest house and contribute to Habitat for Humanity so that other people can have one as well.

Yes, probably some stocks, some bonds, perhaps in one of the distilleries so that I can profit off of our friend's descent into alcohol poisoning. ;) (Take your time, build up a GOOD tolerance...)

Travel though, definitely travel. I've always wanted the chance to go everywhere and see everything. People get a very different perspective on life based on where they are raised. I'm an American, and while I understand that a lot of "Ugly American" stuff exists and people are angry about it, I'd like to find out what the other perspective is.

See -- Even rich, I'm still kinda boring.

I would spend it on everthing i wanted, mostly books and computer games. :D

but the rest i'd put in the bank and wait for the intrest to go up

I'd buy (rent) the smartest minds in the world, have them build me a timemachine, warp back to the eighties and buy myself some Microsoft-stocks from what I'd have left. Then I'd warp back to the present, and lookie here, I'm a gazillionaire.

Cheers

How about taking out a patent on the timemachine and start timetravelling tours?
