Stephen King: Lisey's Story

On October 24th, Stephen King's newest book Lisey's Place will be released. I'd like to have this thread dedicated to a good discussion of that book with any and all horror/Stephen King fans here. Anybody in? Don't make me post 400 times in a row like I did in that Gatsby thread.;)

Ions-Yeah, perhaps I'm a bit worked up about it, especially after reading Cell. That or I can judge whether or not to buy the book by the relative action(or inaction) of this thread.

Aqua-I just recieved my last order from Amazon, if I order again, I'll have to sneak it by the chief financial officer of the house, which is my wife.:p

Do you know if this Stephen King novel actually qualifies as horror or is more in line with his darker thrillers?

Spoiler below...

Lisey's Story is, at its core, a love story--heart-wrenching, passionate, terrifying and tender. It is the multi-layered and expertly crafted tale of a twenty-five year marriage, and a widow's journey through grief, through discovery and--this is King, after all--through a nightmare scape of the ordinary and extraordinary. Through Lisey's mind and heart, the reader is pulled into the intimacies of her marriage to bestselling novelist Scott Landon, and through her we come to know this complicated, troubled and heroic man.

Two years after his death, Lisey sorts through her husband's papers and her own shrouded memories. Following the clues Scott left her and her own instincts, she embarks on a journey that risks both her life and her sanity. She will face Scott's demons as well as her own, traveling into the past and into Boo'ya Moon, the seductive and terrifying world he'd shown her. There lives the power to heal, and the power to destroy.

Lisey Landon is a richly wrought character of charm and complexity, of realized inner strength and redoubtable humor. As the central figure she drives the story, and the story is so vividly textured, the reader will draw in the perfumed air of Boo'ya Moon, will see the sunlight flood through the windows of the Scott's studio--or the night press against them. Her voice will be clear in your ear as you experience the fear and the wonder. If your heart doesn't hitch at the demons she faces in this world and the other, if it doesn't thrill at her courage and endurance, you're going to need to check with a cardiologist, first chance.

Lisey's Story is bright and brilliant. It's dark and desperate. While I'll always consider The Shining, my first ride on King's wild Tilt-A-Whirl, a gorgeous, bloody jewel, I found, on this latest ride, a treasure box heaped with dazzling gems.

hey, that doesn't sound to bad...I may try to reserve it at the library....:)

(thanks Aqua)

I have this one is ordered as well. Next on my TBR list!

SFG75 - How did you like Cell?

The best part of it was the first half. The whole ice cream truck thing and the girls taking on the old lady got it off to a fast start. I was hooked and the first two-hundred pages was really something else. The hiding away in the one man's apartment was perhaps the height of it interest wise for me, I had a hard time putting the book down. I've read some reviews that stated that zombie stories are tough to extend. After the initial surprise, what's left? I kind of felt that criticism was valid, especially during the second half of the book. To me, this occured after they head towards the mythical city and blow up the one flock in the field. After that, it was like a kite that was drug across the ground. The ending was really good as well, so that was a plus. I really liked the book and would love to see it adapted to film.

You summed up Cell beautifully. I agree that a story based on zombies would be hard to keep interesting after the initial shock. A few small details aside, I think King did a good job keeping it fresh and keeping you guessing.

It's going to happen; director Eli Roth (Hostel) is going to start shooting next year. If all goes well and everything's completed on time the movie will come out October 21st 2007 (if imdb is to be believed).

Sweet!, I have to say that Hostel was quite interesting. Gruesome, but interesting.

Just ordered Lisey's Story tonight from Amazon. Now I just have to wait.:( :D

Is it just me, or am I the only one who absolutely hated this book?

There was no reason to care for any of the characters...

Stephen King's own personal bias got in the way...

And who the hell wants to read brand names of clothing and stores in detail? King just rambles on and on...

Why do you keep punishing yourself eyez0nme? You know you hate King, yet you read his next novel only to bitch about his choice of descriptions? Could you express in greater detail by what you mean by personal bias?

Just curious.

Perhaps he's talking about any possible political message King may have included in the book? A few reviews suggested he did such a thing... I'm more curious about the notion that the book contained too much detail on clothing and stores. I don't remember highly detailed descriptions of clothing or clothing stores at all...

Did anyone catch that the end of Cell features a hand-written portion of Lisey's Story? I have yet to sit down and that read section, though I plan on doing so soon.

eyez-You are more than welcome to comment and participate on this thread. While it is not expected that one should be the biggest King fan in the world to pump up the book and King's reputation on this board, being able to disagree thoughtfully is. I hope that you can participate in a thoughtful and productive way, that's what makes this board so great.
