I want to fall in love with a fictional character

I'm looking for a book with a character or characters that I can really relate to and get close to. This usually more easily happens to me when watching a movie because there can be an attractive actress and that goes a part of the way. For example Evan Rachel Wood in Thirteen, Emma Watson as the character of Hermione in Harry Potter (movies), even Elisha Cuthbert in The Girl Next Door to an extent (despite the character not being as deep as the two aforementioned). There were probably more but I'm having trouble remembering. The girl the protagonist likes in Perks of Being a Wallflower (There's a good example of a book). I think regardless of plot or anything the one thing that can always make me like a book more than any other is an alluring female character who can be loved. Ohhh just remembered - the female protagonist in Richard Linklater's film Before Sunrise. I fell in "love" there too... perfect example.

So ~ I'm looking for books with extremely loveable interesting and clever female characters. And to keep this thread unisex and for all sexual orientations, feel free to recommend books with alluring men too... just be sure to mention which it is your recommendation contains: a loveable female, or a loveable male. because I'd be less interested in the loveable male books.

Post away!

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

It's a whole series. My stepmother fell in love with the main characters. She said that she felt like she was there with them.

I'm still reading the first one. I think there are 6 or 7 in the series.

Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind. While her character is very frustrating, she's also endearing.

How serious are you about this love affair?

If you like classics, four heroines I love are

Alice in Alice in Wonderland
Jane Eyre
Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice
Dorothea in Middlemarch

These are not "easy" people, but women of strength and substance - yes, Alice too.

I'll bet you do. Afterall it's in your name right?

Try Celebration by Harry Crews (loveable female)

i dont know if its in my name. i just think most books without characters that the reader can feel emotionally attached too just aren't worth reading. thanks for the recommendation though! and thanks everyone else! ill check all of these out! as for alice and wonderland i've always been interested in reading that because i like the idea of fantasy that is a metaphor for reality. that being said alice in wonderland might take it too far for my tastes jsut from what i've heard about it. ill have to see one of these days.thanks again

I love stephanie plum books by janet evanovich and all those characters(ranger, bob the dog, grandma mazur, lula, joe).Even though people say they are girlie books heh, i tell myself they arent, because of all the rape attempts or murder plots or over all lack of respect for the dead hahaha.

so i think emo17 would like those. super funy, violent, sex, ridiculousness. and like 16 books. good series.

and stephanie plum is defienetly loveable. shes an ex lingerie clerk who becomes a bounty hunter, and is extremely clumsy/moody/and pretty un skilled :D and goes after rapists and killers or just nut jobs who skip bond.

Tess (from Tess of the D'Urbervilles)...if you don't fall in love with her you have no soul. Or the grown-up Eppie from 'Silas Marner'.

Tess is such a tragic figure. Tess of the d'Urbervilles is one of my favorite books, but man, does she get a raw deal.

I definately recommend pride and prejudice - you will love Elizabeth Bennet, and you will totally fall in love with Mr. Darcy...but love affairs with male fictional characters are horrible things....they're distracting and time consuming.

I just read 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' by Khaled Hosseini, and I was taken with the characters Laila and Tariq who had a really striking love story interwoven into the novel. I think I fell a bit in love with Tariq myself.

As far as lovable female characters go, the most obvious for me would be Elizabeth Bennett, as was previously mentioned... The whole Elizabeth Bennet- Mr Darcy thing is very catching, I even saw a book called Pemberley which is an imagined sequel to what probably happened after their marriage.

...and yes, not only is it distracting and time consuming to fall in love with male fictional characters, but it totally warps your perception of actual male human beings!:)

For great female characters, I definitely recommend Pride and Prejudice. Anne of Green Gables also comes to mind, and of course Little Women - Jo has always been my favorite.

As for male characters, I have "fallen in love" with the following: Franck Lestafier from Anna Gavalda's Emsemble, c'est tout (Hunting and Gathering), Roland Deschain from the Dark Tower series by Stephen King, Father Lorenzo Quart from Arturo Pérez-Reverte's La Piel del Tambor (The Seville Communion), Hugo Pratt's Corto Maltese and Dan from Louise May Alcott's Jo's Boys. There's definitely a pattern here...

I really enjoyed the heroine in The Queen's Fool by Philippa Gregory. Another that I found to my liking was Anita Blake in Laurell K. Hamilton's series. Her wit and sarcasm are right up my ally.

As for males, I truly enjoyed the character of Francis Crawford of Lymond in Dorothy Dunnett's The Game of Kings.

I fell for Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice as well as Joe Kavalier in Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.

i fall in love with fictional character's quite frequently, it's getting annoying.

some of the ones i've fallen in love with:
edward cullen from twilight (what girl hasn't?)
harry potter
Erik from Phantom by Susan Kay
Hades, god of the underworld
