I started a biography of Michael Collins a couple of months ago.
It is interesting but it is a big book that isn't very handy, so it remains on the living-room table and I don't pick it up very often. I am now reading an essay in French on the Gulf Stream, its influence on the climate, the...
I gave up on quite a lot last year
because I decided to no longer bother with those I didn't really like. I never finished "Envy" by Sandra Brown, " My name is red" by Orhan Pamuk, " American gods" by Neil Gaiman , among others.
I am a maniac. I cover them with glossy paper so they won't get too tattered because I often carry them with me almost wherever I go. I don't mind giving them away once I've read them, though.
I have been buying books for my brother for years. He isn't much of a reader and he used to read maybe 1 out of 5 or 6. Surprisingly, this year, he suddenly started reading much more and buying books himself which makes me very proud. I am glad I never gave up ! So, this time, for once, I didn't...
I have beaten my record this year.
I read more than 60 so far, which is twice as many as usual, but I must admit I've read mainly crime and easy reading this year. I used to read more "serious" stuff.
It gets worse and worse.
Last year, I decided I'd buy only at used bookstores because my job was in jeopardy and I thought I'd better start saving, just in case. Wrong decision ! Books being cheaper, I'm buying more than ever.
I buy more and more at used bookstores,
although I have been wondering whether it really is a bargain, as I tend to let myself go and buy more books because they cost only half as much . When I buy at a regular bookstore, I take only the book(s) I really fancy to keep expenses as low as...
I don't dare start counting.
I recently got rid of a few that have been on my shelves for years and that I'll probably never read. Still, I must have about 70 waiting. Although I woved I wouldn't buy any more this year, I keep stumbling on new releases by my favourite authors, sequels...
Same for me. I rather liked the poetic writing, but most of the time didn't even know what he was referring to and had trouble following his thoughts, so I kept putting it down. I pushed myself till I got to page 200, then gave up definitely. The book has over 700 pages. Finishing it probably...
I ,too, get tired of doing the same things after a short while. I painted for a few years, then did tapestry. Now, I'm into cross-stitching. I was a fan of formula 1 racing until I switched over to basket-ball. Now, I prefer Handball ( only as a spectator, though). I also tried candle-making...
As I like classic Agatha-Christie-style mysteries, someone recommended Dorothy L. Sayers. I am now reading " five red herrings" and I am bored with the murder-investigation which consists mainly in checking train-schedules. "Did the murderer take the 1.56 to Glasgow or the 2.24 to Ayr ? Could he...
The book is one of my favourites.
I have totally drawn into that somewhat out of time southern atmosphere. The movie didn't quite succeed in capturing it entirely, although I enjoyed it as well and always like to watch it again.
I don't like to recommend books because unless you know the person very well, it is difficult to guess whether (s)he'll like it or not . I passed on some books I had enjoyed to colleagues who hated them. I myself have been given " great " books which I had to push myself to finish. It is...
I enjoyed "Angela's ashes" but didn't like "T'is" at all. "Angela's ashes" was worth reading, because besides being a family story, it also is a testimony of Ireland's social history. His time at the army and first years as a teacher were much less interesting and the writing was very dull.
I usually like complex plots with many characters, but I remember a novel by Balzac I gave up on because there were just too many counts and countesses with lenghty names . I was tired of trying to remember who was who and who had said what.
I read " remains of the day" last year and enjoyed it, though I wouldn't count it as one of my favourites. I just started " when we were orphans". It is true that it is a bit strange. Doesn't really seem to be getting anywhere, but I definitely like his writing.
