    Audio books.

I love good audiobooks, too. Especially Lolita read by Jeremy Irons is a bloody tour de force. But what makes me upset about audiobooks is the quality of the products themselves. Some discs contain errors and the sound jumps here and there. I'm not talking about one particular title, but two of...

    Natsuo Kirino: Out

Soft Cheeks came out a year after the publication of Out. It's a story about a mother in search of her five-year-daughter who disappeared when her family and the mother's lover's family were staying at the lover's villa. The lack of my writing skills makes it sound like a silly joke but it's...

    Natsuo Kirino: Out

Further Reading Those who liked Out might be interested to try the author's other novel Soft Cheeks. English translation has not come out yet I'm afraid, but according to Kirino's official website, there are French, Italian, Korean and Taiwanese translations available.

    Natsuo Kirino: Out

Up until recently, I've been under the impression that this genre, crime fiction, was called thus because it's focused on crimes or criminals themselves. Therefore, not like the mainstream whodunits, the core interest of the story is laid on the process of crimes committed or how the characters'...

    Natsuo Kirino: Out

It's Netherbard; a combination term of 'nether' and 'bard.' I thought 'nether' (as in netherworld) meant 'lower' or 'underground.' In other words, I wanted my handle name to mean 'underground poet.' Perhaps I gave myself a rather strange name? Sorry, I'm getting off the subject here.

    Favourite King Movie, and Book

I think The Shawshank Redemption is one of the rare cases that a film adaptation surpassed the original. I love it intensely, even among all the movies I've ever seen it's one of my favourites. As for King books, among the seventeen I've read so far, The Dead Zone would be my favourite.

    Natsuo Kirino: Out

So we can continue using a Book of the Month thread for June in July? Well, to be honest, the small details of the plot are already escaping my memory, but I don't remember any incoherence of charters' motivations that some people mentioned above. Maybe I was too engrossed in the extreme...

    The Masters of Hard-Boiled Detectives

No one has mentioned James Crumley yet? I'm thinking of reading his The Wrong Case or The Last Good Kiss.

    Ellery Queen

I thought Ellery Queen's works in English were pretty much out of print, or quite rare at best. In Japan we have lots of translation of his/their works still in print and popular as well.

I bought two of Living Stereo titles: Brahms, Tchikovsky: Violin Concertos - Fritz Reiner; Jascha Heifetz; Chicago Symphony Orchestra Beethoven Sonatas - Artur Rubinstein Both CD/SACD hybrid discs. I wonder if Super Audio CD is common among western countries. It's still unfamiliar in my...

    Natsuo Kirino: Out

This novel may not be a book to be enjoyed but witnessed with journalistic eye. The story shed too much light on maladies of the present Japan to be categorized as mere entertainment. It was indeed a very disturbing book. And to be honest, I found myself disturbingly enjoying it. While some...

    Online Book Buying

Online shopping is always a gamble because you can't see the product in three dimensions. And as for western books I have little choice but to purchase through the Internet because I live in Japan and my local bookstores, even the largest one, have hardly enough foreign books I want. Recently...

    Greeting

Thank you everyone! >>#2 Halo Hello, Halo (no pun intended.) By English literature I unconsciously meant literary works in English. Over the past few years I've been trying to catch up with classical works and I liked The Picture of Dorian Gray and Wuthering Heights very much. Among the...
