people that can't read in cars>>>WIMPS?

I hate it when I don't have anything to read on a long car ride, I can't sleep in a car though.
I feel sorry for those who can't read in a car, a long ride with nothing to do but look at the scenery

You've apparently never "enjoyed" a long car ride with two or more children. Scenery? What scenery?

I can read just fine on busses, trains or anything bumpy, but as soon as there's decent traction, I get motion sickness. :(

I can't read in a moving vehicle too! I tried doing that just as recently as last weekend when I was travelling - but Jonathan Strange was a little too big and the it wasn't nearly bright enough to read. Plus I confirmed again that I can't read in a moving vehicle.

When I'm driving, I try to get audiobooks - that way I *read* while driving, killing two birds with one stone. Except audiobooks are bloody expensive, considering the exchange rate. :(

I've no problems eating my chicken while I'm driving though. Maybe it's a tradeoff - if you can't read in a moving vehicle, you should have no problems eating in one.

p.s. dele - Sphere is good, isn't it? I loved it.

I can read in a moving vehicle, but sometimes I get a little nauseous. So when that happens, I just stare out the window for a bit. That's supposed to help your mind get a frame of reference for the motions of the juices in your inner ear. I believe the same thing goes for seasickness. If you are where you can see the horizon, you're less likely to get sick. Allegedly.

I was driving down the highway one evening when I saw a pickup truck with one of those portable DVD players sitting on the dash. I figured the driver had a Disney movie playing to entertain his children or something. As I pulled alongside, I could easily see that it was definitely not entertainment for children. There was a woman doing something to this guy... I slowed to take an exit and noticed that he was swerving a little. It's pretty sad when you need porno so bad that you'll take it in the car with you!

I can't read in the car or on the bus, but I can read on the train and the underground. Haven't tried the tram just yet.

I'm not a wimp, I just don't think people'd appreciate if I threw up on them.

No, I am a wimp.

Hmm, I thought "whimp" was written "wimp", but then I read this

driving is for music

I disagree. There's nothing better than listening to a nice play on Radio 4 whilst driving along some country roads... Oh apart from listening to Radio 2 from about 11pm - 5am.

Actually I have but not that often, but I must say that when there are small children in the car, reading or scenery is the least of you problem :)

As long as there's light to read by I can read anywhere. I never leave the house without something to read or a crossword to work on. When I'm on the bus or tube I can't believe the people who just sit there and stare, bovinely, at a non existent wall 18 inches in front of them. What do they think about? Do they think at all? My mind starts to explode if I'm not reading, writing, crosswording (long live cruciverbalism!) or talking (to someone else not myself). I have an ex wife who thought my reading was anti social; if I put the book down and watched TV that was being social. But then she'd get annoyed because I knew nothing about soap operas and kept asking questions - who's that? Is she married to him? Was it all a dream then? Why is she putting that atomic bomb there?

I don't need a book to feel sick in a car, bus or train. I feel ill anyway. Undergrounds are OK, as long as I haven't taken a train or bus before taking the underground.
But I read anyway... untill I feel like I might puke. ;)

I have also discovered that, when I read in a bus at 7 a.m. I don't feel bad at all, so I think it's got something to do with time too. If I take the 7.30 bus however, I don't feel quite that well.
And if I stand while reading in the underground, I feel fine too, but if I sit and read in it, then I start feeling ill.

Aeroplanes are the worst, my heads spins around and I feel sick, I take tablets though, which is why I can read in aeroplanes too, because even though I feel like a total mess, they make sure I don't puke. :D

Trust me, there is never a time when my mind is doing nothing, no matter what the outward appearance may be. If I am staring off into space, rest assured, I am thinking of something, it may be something I did, something I am going to do or planning to do, or something totally imaginary. (And I talk to myself, too, but not in public!) If I know I will have to wait for some time for whatever reason, I do try to have something to read or otherwise occupy myself.
I have a friend like your ex. Her husband must pay attention to her or do the same thing she is doing when they are together. My husband and I however are content to do different things in the same room. My only annoyance is when he asks me about a television show he is watching while I have been reading. Of course I don't know what is going on!!!

What is up with everyone giving out intimate details of their sex lives!?!?!?!?! Frankly, my bambi...I don't give a viaduct.

As for reading in cars, well, sometimes I partake, but usually I admire the scenery...

And anyway, I don't own a car...my girlfriend does...but I do have a beast of a scooter! So, I put it to you...reading on a scooter>>>WIMPISH?

For the love of every sacred, Ou Be! You NEVER cease to amaze me with how well you can twist things and then throw it in people's faces! It isn't necessary, it isn't wanted, and it sure isn't appreciated here.

Aww...shush now...I'm blushing! I have a little question though...'every sacred' what!?! Fish? Animal? Book? ME!?!

Please try to keep things on topic though...reading books in transport...If I am to read, whilst on the move, a train is my prefered mode of transport.

No, it certainly wasn't you... It was just me trying to do two things at once - keep my temper, and keep this thread rated PG.

But I do agree that we should drop this and get back on topic.

I find it pretty distracting to read in a car or any sort of moving vehicle. I love looking at the scenery and wishing I lived in the countryside instead of the drab city I'm stuck in.

Reading in the car doesn't usually bother me, as a matter of fact I always make sure I have a book on hand somewhere when I'm out of the house. On long car trips however, I can only read for a certain amount of time before my neck starts to bother me, at which point I take a break for a little while.
Books on tape would be awesome, but I've never yet run across my favorites offered that way.
