Do you like to read with background noise, or need complete silence?

While I prefer silence or white noise..what I've had to adapt to is the total opposite! With 10 kids and a husband in the house, quiet is a rare and precious commodity. In fact, total silence( except in the wee hours) is a sign I need to see what the pack is up to.

This topic sounds eerily familiar.

Anyway... for me, it depends on if I feel like turning on the radio or TV. Most of the time I'll have music or a television show playing in the background. Sometimes, though, I just want complete and utter silence when reading.

I usually listen to some white noise on my QuietComfort 2 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones.

I so need to invest in those. That way, I can read while the wife watches t.v. I hate background noise. The only noise I can stand in the background is when I have the satellite radio on the accoustic channel. Other than that, my concentration is just thrown off.

A lot of my reading/writing takes place at school during those redundant classes where they go over things again and again, so I can't really manage perfect silence. At home, we've got a little puppy running around all the time, which also makes a bit of quiet hard to get. The way I see it, if it's a good enough book, it'll tug me into it through the barking, yellling, and orchestra of breaking glass and falling chairs. If needed, I just turn on some of my own music so the noise is more familiar.

At the same time, I like to read before bed, and I couldn't stand it if there was too much noise during that particular ritual. It's intended to be peaceful so I can go to sleep easily, after all.

I can handle alot of noise when I read - as long as the noise isn't in the immediate room that I'm in. My house if pretty active so I'm used to noise. But I can't read with the TV on. Most cases it's late at nite and fairly quiet. When the "garage band" is playing, which gets really loud, I can still read cause I'm not in that room.:)

I usually listen to music while i read. I don't like having complete silence around me unless i read something for university or when i study.

I prefer to read in complete silence, but usually I'm forced to read with the radio or TV going in the background. What really puts me off reading isi people talking in the background - when I'm reading during a loud conversation I find myself having to re-read passages continuously to register them.

I can handle people talking if they're fairly quiet..but when they see I'm reading and demand my attention for some silly reason, such as the fifth time someone's asked, "What's for supper, mom?" What's really really annoying is when they've all been in the same room when I answered the question the first four times!

:D Yeah I could see how that could get on one's nerves.

While I far prefer silence, I can do both. I'll read at home with kids or TV in the background, although this is the hardest, the bus, airplane, at work during slack times. I does become annoying though when people directly ask questions.

It depends on my mood...
sometimes I have to have complete silence (but that is rare).
Most of the time I prefer just a little background noise.

Eihter way. Television, radio, talking...it doesn't bother me. If the book is light enough, I can keep up a conversation as well. I dunno, I guess if I can't get interested ina book eough to concentrate on it, then it must not be very good.

I prefer to read in silence, but I usually have to read with people around at school. Or someone in the other room has a TV on or something. So I can do both.

Get yourself some plugs. :D

Whenever I tried to listen to audios with headphones, someone would walk into the room and start talking to me..never failed, EVERYTIME. Earplugs would work the same way. The family is used to having 24/7/365 availability...dirty rotten scoundrels:rolleyes:

Wouldnt mind if there is background noise. I get so engrossed while reading a book, it gets blocked out  unless its some kinda music and its really catchy :)
