Revamping the BOTM process

Should we have a "quota" for the BOTM picks?

Just a few thoughts....

-Members will vote on 8 to 10 suggested books

-One book must be historical fiction

-One book must be non-fiction

-One book must be Sci-Fi or horror

I have nothing against the classics, but I think this idea would go along way for ensuring that a wider range of picks has the chance to make the BOTM. Right now, we have a pretty predictable sequence of classics and books like The Life of Pi which are chosen. If you check our forum stats, the sci-fi/horror section outdraws the fiction section, and any other specialized forum section.

The poll is set up so you can vote for one or all of these sub-sections to be included as a mandatory category in our selection process or you can vote against the idea in its entirety.

I love polls that add up to more than 100%.

And I am inclined to agree. My participation is more likely if it is a book I actually want to read or is on my TBR pile.

A glance at the tag cloud for this site makes the choice a no-brainer. Horror by far, in big black capital letters.

We have a tag cloud? Cool. Learn something new every day.

I hope means we can read some delicious Lovecraft.

I like the idea of having genre selection but I think this has lead to it being pushed aside when there are popular general fiction titles offered at the same time.
I know that horror titles are sometimes suggested for October but perhaps have different titles by genre alternate by month with regular fiction titles throughout the year?

Good question!

The september and summer 2010 threads had 8 and 9 choices respectively. The lowest amount recommended was 4 and that was for May's discussion.

From the poll, it appears that requiring one book to be sci-fi/horror would be the most agreeable. If it was required that one of five books be of the horror genre, that would perhaps be most appropriate.

I like the idea also of having different genre selections, the problem is we have tried it and it has not worked.

An examle is May's BOTM,Sara Canary,5 people voted, only 2 participated in the discussion.Likewise with other selections.

If you all want to try again,I am up for it.

That's very poor manners. Are the votes anonymous? If they are, that's the first thing I'd change. If you've no intention of playing, you shouldn't be voting. And if you're only going to read if your book choice wins, then you're probably the wrong personality type for a book of the month club.

Sometimes it's hard to project what my life will be like when the we're choosing two months or more ahead. And sometimes, I just forget...:innocent:

I've been forgetting some of the discussions too. For instance, I planned on participating in the April discussion but got sidetracked. It wasn't always a case of "My choice lost so I won't join in".

Wow guys,no mystery? I'm hurt . Never was a big fan of the classics, but limits: such as "one book has to be this genre and this book has to be that genre" might interest people whose favorite genres don't get mentioned often, but if one horror book is there, you can't suggest another one of the same genre(unless I read the OP wrong).

I like a good mystery too. It does seem a shame to leave them out of the mix.

LR-I agree entirely. The purpose of this thread is to get folks to post and propose new ideas to rejuvenate the BOTM. I believe we have a lot of people who would participate, but don't due to their genre being left out. I've personally PM'd a lot of members and I thank you for your participation to make the process work. I'll PM a mod or two and ask for the poll to be changed.

I have voted several times and not participated simply because I don't have the book and it would be hard for me to get a copy unless I order it online, which would mean paying about 20 dollars on top of the price of the book for shipping and handling, plus having to wait 2 to 3 weeks for delivery. So I usually vote for or suggest a book I own or one I've already decided to order.

How about asking people to sign up for book club and then ask only those who sign up to make suggestions and choose the books? Once the discussions starts, anybody can participate. Just a thought...

As for genres, I wouldn't mind if we skipped the classics altogether :D

I added Mystery as requested.Vote on.:)

:lol:Thought about it:devil:.

I agree though. This is a good idea, having different genres, and having picked out books ahead and give people the oportunity to find them or order them if possible.
