Revamping the BOTM process

Should we have a "quota" for the BOTM picks?

  • Total voters
    19
  • Poll closed .
I haven't been here (a member) to long and never really looked into BAR's book of the month thread. But looking at it, it looks like a cool idea and I think some diversity in genres would be the way to go. Maybe more members would participate if more genres were represented.

I voted A,B,C and E
I would've voted for Stewart but... ahh nevermind

I like the idea of both making a non-fiction and a sci-fi/horror/fantasy book picked. I think there are a lot more sci-fi/horror/fantasy fans then most think. And I think that non-fiction is overlooked. It is literature after all. (It would also force me to read more of it.) Having diversity, as mentioned by brk_3 is a good thing. I read all types of genres.

I must admit though, like sparkchaser said, I would tend to be good with books I already have. If it's not a book I'm interested in, I would just pass on it.

I haven't paid enough attention to the book club before. Do you make a choice well in advance? Just wondering how long one would have to obtain the book. If it's a good month in advance, it would give those of us that don't have the book time to get our hands on a copy.

As you may know, this one isn't one of them. Could we just agree that all BOTM polls will be open polls? Just say it will be and let it be done.

The problem I have with this is that I don't want whoever voted and not participated, being scolded afterwards.
It will be appreciated though,if someone votes,to participate even though their pick doesn't win.

Yes,we try at least to.We ote and make suggestions.:D

I'm sorry but I don't get how this would be done. Would everyone have to suggest one book by each genre? And if so, would we still be using the "I second a book" to get to the 10 limit for the poll?

I think if something like this is done, everyone who votes has to commit to participate ven though their book doesn't win.:D

Members wouldn't have to suggest a book for every genre. To me, I think the best option might be to start with the one or two selective genre choices first: "Hey, who wants to nominate a horror book for this thread? After a few posts or none at all, you would move on to the next genre; if that is what is agreed upon here, or you will then open up the rest of the slots for any and all suggestions.

Not exactly. Once again, you just call for suggestions for one or two categories. After that, then you say, "O.k., we need 8 more selections, any genre by ay author...." and you're off to the races. So you might have two specific genres and then the other 8 books up for suggestion can be chosen just like we do now. All it takes is for a poll to be changed with new selections and life is good.

So, more than one book a month? And people just choose which one they're interested in reading after they've been picked by a poll?

The choices in a poll should be less than 8 in my opinion cause votes will be spread out.

I worked with someone who called everyone "chief." Kind of wears on ya after awhile.

I love the BOTM on BAR and when I first joined I immediately started borrowing some of the previous months BOTM winners.

My only problem comes down to my reliance on a book's availability at my library.

Other than that, my only other "issue" is with my reading speed. This generally means I prefer books with less than 600 pages. This cutoff has increased from 400 since I joined BAR, so maybe in a few more years, I could even tackle War And Peace or Les Miserables!

As for genres/non-fiction etc, I love diversity in my reading so I say bring it on!

I am with you! That's why Brothers Karamazov are 3 months!

I was thinking we put SFG's idea to use:
one non-fiction
one sci-fi or horror,fantasy
one Mystery
for Ocober,November ,December.

What say you?
