  • Did you get to watch the Pillars of the Earth miniseries? I wanted to check it out but I need to read the book first.
I know I was going to get to some more horror, and I will still, but you ought to try Sinner, Baker, Fabulist, Priest; Red Mask, Black Mask, Gentleman, Beast by Eugie Foster. It's more straight fantasy and one of the best I've read this year.
Nah, I won't post a thread on Pigeons From Hell. It wasn't a standout for me. I did read my first story by Caitlin Kiernan recently. It was called In the Water Works (Birmingham Alabama 1888). Slightly grotesque but I'm not going to bother with a thread for it either. I read another old one that was really good though, I'll put it up.
That reminds me of something Stephen King once said about why he writes. Putting his scariest thoughts down on paper as a story helps him confront his own fears. Sharing them makes them less real.

I read Pigeons From Hell by Robert E. Howard the other day and liked it pretty well. I can't find it online though. I think Howard's books still sell really well so that might have something to do with it. I've been thinking also about reading Oliver Onions' The Beckoning Fair One but the damn thing is over 60 pages long! That's pushing it for my short fiction limits.
He got to read Brite and Kiernan for college? Awesome. I took a horror fiction class in college and we never got to read Brite. Boo!
I've only seen Kiernan's novels in mainstream bookstores. Never her novellas or story collections. I think they're not as easy to find since those projects are put out by smaller publishers. BTW, the two of them collaborated on a book called Wrong Things. It wasn't bad.
Hey there! Glad to see you're trying out Poppy Z. Brite.
I think I'm going to start Threshold today. I've been in the mood for dark fantasy/horror.
Okay, I've finished Sarah Canary and I'm ready to discuss. I'll wait for you to create the thread so I'll know when your done too. Or am I going it alone on this one?
Golden Age Vol. I? I've been tempted to buy that and the Secret History.. a few times but haven't done it. I've read the Lucious Shepard and James Patrick Kelly stories and liked them both fairly well. Lots of sort of non-genre writing authors in that book. Interesting. I bought American Supernatural Tales recently and I'm going to read it as slowly as I can possibly stand.
I looked for Tales of Pain and Wonder and they didn't have it. There were some other books by Kiernan but I didn't buy any. I did get Sarah Canary though in case it happens to win the poll.
Have I got the science fiction hook in you yet? I'm trying to expand my genre tastes into more horror and some fantasy with more short stories. Any suggestions besides that Caitlin Kiernan story? We head down to Portland this weekend at that means a trip to Powell's.

Look for new short story thread.
Yeah, it's a podcast. Unfortunately I couldn't find it in any other format. It's not super long though (approx. 20 minutes) so tough it out dammit! When you go to the site scroll down just a tad bit and click on the play arrow next to the speaker symbol.
Heya there. Here is a short story I think you'll like. I'm not bothering to put it in the short story sub-forum because of its ability to offend with a bit of adult language. This is a short podcast. Roadside Rescue by Pat Cadigan
