Another excellent story from Ted Chiang and this one may be my favorite of his. If you liked Flowers for Algernon and its idea of artificially increasing intelligence you should like this one too.

Far future people have changed to not only survive in a radioactive and hostile world, but even thrive. Bacigalupi lived in or around a Montana mining town and this story was inspired by something he saw in that setting. Things in this distant future are very different.
I've never once re-read any book. I can't stand the idea that I am missing out on something that is completely new to me. Even if the book turns out to be crap at least it was still unexpected and I know which authors, types of books, plots, etc. might not be to my liking in the future.

I just finished reading Julius Winsome which was only Donovan's third but very well done book. It is only 223 pages so it is a very quick read and it reminded me a little bit of Cormac McCarthy's The Road. Both stories deal somewhat with issues of tragedy, solitude, hopelessness and redemption...
