Top 5 Bands

i have never met a 19 year old who knew who Nosferatu was!

I must have been about 10 when I discovered the Werner Herzog version. And the same age - or 11 - when I saw the original.

Nosferatu Man- I'm not the hardest guy in town....I hate metal. All I like is Hard Classic Rock! With the possible exception of some AC/DC songs....

Rage Against the Machine is awesome. they're great for adrenaline at the gym

Yeah, the MP3 player and Rage make my workouts incredibly intense. ...well, there were those pills... and that 10 cc syringe with methylated testosterone in it. ;) I'll also throw in some Godsmack.

Rage is one of the few harder bands that I hold in esteem. They mixed punk, metal, rap and political revolution really well. But, back in the younger days, I loved AC/DC, GNR, Soundgarden, ooohh and Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor went out there with NIN. "Closer" is a great everything song. Mad at someone? Listen to "Closer". Wanna good workout? Wanna dance? Wanna have crazy-sex? "Closer".

But, believe it or not, the only thing I listened to until middle school was rock from the 50s, 60s and 70s. I still have a real appreciation for the rock classics.

I can't find how you can call the music from the 50's real rock. It was mostly R&B with some horrible Guitar cords.

I love them, too! I was into NIN in highschool (I was part of that crowd). They're all awesome bands. And, same as you, until I hit grade 9 all I listened to was stuff from the 50's - 70's because that's what my parents listened to. From Bill Haley and the Comets, and the Big Bopper (I LOVED him), to Janis Joplin. Love them all. I got my love of CCR from my parents

Drizzt Do'Urden,

To quote John Lennon, "Before Elvis, there was nothing." ...or something like that. Sorry if I screwed it up somehow, but I don't have time to check it. Listen to the music from the forties and then listen to Elvis, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, CHUCK BERRY, etc. These guys went a whole new direction. Then the 60s came along and that creativity just expanded. I see it as kind of like the invention of the airplane. We came into the century on horseback and by the sixties we were on the moon. Well, musically, we came in with traditional musical styles that took decades and centuries to change. Then, by the 90s, wow, music changes constantly. I give a lot of credit to the rule breakers in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. If you just don't like it, that's all you, and I have no problem with that, but if you ever get a chance to listen more to it, it can help you get a better appreciation for rock.

Jenem,

Same story here. My parents always listened to the golden oldies, and I still love all the old music. Is it just me or did "pop" seem to have a little more soul back then? Maybe I'm biased, but today, I feel like you have to dig to find good music. I've even heard Chris Brubeck (son of Dave Brubeck) talk about the lack of pop talent today. He said things are definitely different from when he grew up in the 60s.

Jenem, what was "that" crowd? I'm not sure, but I think "that" crowd changes from school to school. The people that listened to NIN when I was in high school were the drummers in the band and me (jock/musician/nerd).

Yeah … 70s through 80s, my 20th Century.

Best bands ever:

Pink Floyd
Yes
The Clash (don't think I saw them mentioned anywhere, and they should be)
Big Brother & the Holding Company (with Janis Joplin -- had something her subsequent bands lacked, I think)
Hendrix with various bands.

None more recent can compete with the bird on my widowsill, singing songs. Called a Butcherbird, but a different species to the European one of same common name. Best songbird in the world.

Recently I've been listening mostly to old acoustic blues from way back before the 50s, interspersed with a bit of Mozart now and then. Heard the original version of You Gotta Move, made popular by the Rolling Stones. Not the Rev. Gary Davis' version but the other one, the one the Stones tried to duplicate. Raw, gritty, powerful. Made the Stones sound thin, washed out little …oh, yeah, I've said this before…

And Margie Evans' version of Just a Closer Walk with Thee. From her album Drowning in a Sea of Love, recorded with The Mighty Reapers. Reaction: "Are you a Christian, son?" and he says: "Maam, I am today." Line is from some song, I can't remember what it was, or who by.

And by the way, Billy O: I am one who does miss Oobie.

Alright I admit it!!!! I miss Oobie Doobie as well, Bring him back now (after a suitably public penance).!!
And bring back that cute, cuddly little, Warm Enema chappy. Please.
And then, perhaps, Irene Wilde will grace us all with her blessed presence again.
And then I might stop being crabby and picking on all the bloody students (not including Freya).

And open an over 18 thread so people like Oobie Doobie, Warm Enema, Irene & myself can be as obnoxious as we like without upsetting the students and accountants. Please?

oube is here. How long will he last?...make your wagers. THF isn't the first to kick him off.
...and you may have seen this already...so that thread isn't likely to happen

Can't agree with you at all. Yeah, some cool stuff went down in the 80s. AC/DC came back in black in 1980. The Talking Heads were great. Phish got together. Soundgarden was starting to play. But when I listen to 80s music, I hear this idea that all music was eventually going to be electronic and would be made from a I-IV-V recipe, and I don't like it. A lot of it just sounds cheap and, for lack of a better term, blah! However, I realize a lot of people love the 80s, so feel free to flame me.

My vote for musical golden era probably goes to late 50s-60s-70s. Rock has since lost its way in all the commercialism since then while rap and hip hop seem to have found their niche in all the commercialism. That's coming from someone who's not a rap fan. I just don't feel it or identify with it... Well, unless some girl is dancing up on me in a dance club, but I prefer bars and live music to the club scene.

99%? I think you're a little generous with your assessment. Even rap artists are using bands now. I don't like the 80s, and at one time, I was a severe music snob, and I would lash out at people who liked "dumb" music, but a conversation with a friend one day made me realize that music is heard differently by everybody. Now, I can accept what people listen to regardless of what I think about the music.

*Applaudes* lol Yah, my mom says her favourite band is one called "bread" and I think it's one of the worst ever, also when I say I like AC/DC she spits....lol

Hehe, I'm supposed to be a musician but I know absolutely nothing about the history of Rock, compared to you guys. But... I'm a musician in my own little world, so I think I'll be ok.

Anyway... Hay: Have 100 Points. :D
