Vampire Novel Recommendations

All these suggestions are from the other thread, but ones that hopefully fit in better with what you're looking for (though I can't compare with Rice or Hamilton, since I haven't read them):

Sunshine by Robin McKinley
Lost souls by Poppy Z Brite (OK, there's some sex, but mostly at the same time as the violence ;) )
I am Legend by Richard Matheson
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
The Dresden files (series) by Jim Butcher (vampires turn up in pt. 5, I think)

If you like vampire books with a bit of romance you should definitely try Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Books, the first one being Dead Until Dark. They are funny and sexy (not porn) and good mysteries. A bit lighter still is Mary Janice Davidson's Undead Series, Undead and Unwed being the first. A bit like Clueless meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Kim Harrison's books about the witch Rachel Morgan are perhaps most like Hamilton in style, although they deal with all things mysterious and not just vamps. Start with Dead Witch Walking. Also, if you're not already - go to amazon.com, search for the books you know you like and read the "listmanias" that show up - that's a great way to find new books!

I have heard really good things about both of these books, so I'd like to second that recommendation. There's also Salems Lot by Stephen King which is also meant to be quite good
 
I don't think I'd be as in love with vampires if it hadn't been for Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles.

I thought this when I read 'Pandora' and 'Vittorio'. Are they officially part of the chronicles? Anyway...
 
I enjoy Rice's vampire novels too. The ones really worth reading are Interview With the Vampire through Memnoch the Devil. Pandora was great too, and the others vary from pretty good to bloody awful.

A few years ago I read this book called Fat White Vampire Blues. Hilarious; although it's about vampires who live in New Orleans, this book is worlds apart from anything by Anne Rice. The author's name is Andrew Fox, and he even wrote a sequel called Bride of the Fat White Vampire. If you're tired of the vampire as charming seducer, then check these books out.
 
I read that site; I forgot about The Book of Common Dread. That book was fantastic, although the sequel wasn't so great. Shame they're out of print...
 
I just read a really great one by Jenna Maclaine called The Wages of Sin. Also look for the Dark-Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, the Rachel Morgan series by Kim Harrison, the Women of the Otherwold series by Kelly Armstrong, the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris, the Undead series by MaryJanice Davidson, the Dark series by Christine Feehan (although I didn't care much for them), Moon-Called by Patricia Briggs, Katie Macalister's vampire series (and also her Aisling Grey series, though it's not vampire), Kresley Cole's new series, Maggie Shayne, ....

Paranormals that have been recommended to me but that I haven't read yet: Nina Bangs, L.A. Banks, Angela Knight, Lyndsey Sands, JR Ward, Karen Marie Moning, Susan Sizemore, Julie Miller, Emma Holly, Laurie Handeland, Rosemary Laurey....

Oh, Kresley Cole has a new series coming out about vampire-slaying valkyries. I read a short story of hers in the Playing Easy to Get anthology and loved it. First book is out in April. I noticed your screen name and thought of it....

Both novels are part of a series called New Tales of the Vampires. Vittorio the Vampire has nothing to do with the characters in the Chronicles (although they are referenced briefly in the beginning). Pandora should have been part of the Vampire Chronicles. Although she was a minor character, she was still part of the Coven.
also, there was talk of Armand coming back from the dead

If you can find it, check out Brian Stableford's Empire of Fear or Kim Newman's Anno Dracula series. Both of these are kind of 'alternate history' books, where vampires hold the most powerful positions in government and commerce. Good Stuff. Also really good is Dan Simmon's Children of the Night and Carrion Comfort. The latter is one of my fave horror novels of all time.
 
I don’t often read horror books, but I have read some of both the Anita Blake series as well as a few of Anne Rice’s books. Both series quickly became unreadable to me (though in the long run I liked Rice's writing better). But then one of my favorite new writers came out with a novel that featured a vampire. The book is called Already Dead and the writer is Charlie Huston. Check out more info and an excerpt on his web site at www.pulpnoir.com. Click on the link titled ‘Joe Pitt’. Hello There.

I to love the vampire books and am just in the process of finishing a book called “Necroscope Avengers” it’s by “Brian Lumley” ISBN 0-812-57019-7. It’s a great book with plenty of action, in some places it can get a little gory but it’s not over the top. I am about 15 pages from the end but so far it has been a great read. Just thought I would let you know that this book is out there if you did not know already.

I didn't read through the entire thread. But if you like vampire novels, Brian Lumbley (may not be spelled write) has an entire series of books called the Necroscope series. I read them way back when in the stone age. Of course, there is also Salem's Lot (Stephen King). These are the only ones that I can think of, that you haven't mentioned yet.
 
I think it depends on what kind of vampire fiction you want to read. If you're looking for a more traditional vampire story - i.e., people start dying, hero realizes there's a vampire or vampires at work and goes after them - then I would heartily recommend Stephen King's Salem's Lot, my all-time favorite book.

On the other hand, if you want something where the vampires are more characterized (even protagonists), you'll probably be happier with something by Anne Rice. The only one of hers I read was Interview With the Vampire, and it was for a college class and I never finished it. Actually, I think I only got a third of the way into it. :( Just wasn't that into it, plus had too much stuff going on, though I will probably try it again someday.

I'm also planning on reading some Anne Rice. I'm trying to make sure no one has come up with my idea in vampire fiction before--as well as trying to enjoy myself reading. ^-^ Since my novel is almost finished, I should be looking for a publisher soon, and I wanted to be able to say my idea was at least somewhat unique. Thanks for your help, everybody.
(BTW, I looked at a library for these--not my local one, which has about 100 books, but at the one in the bigger city nearby, and I couldn't find a single one. I had to order them! So annoying...)
 
Can anyone recommend a good vampire print on demand book? I read somewhere that in 2002 there were 150 print on demand vampire novels published. I've checked out some of the free e-books and online stuff, with various levels of succes, some I love, some ain't so hot, but full marks for trying. I was just wondering if anyone out there had unearthed any gems from the POD market vampire wise.
