    Neal Stephenson, Frederick George: Cobweb

Hi folks, has anyone yet read "Cobweb" by Neal Stephenson and [name forgotten]? Sounds mildly intersting from the cover text but not enough to buy blind. Jan

    Character name needed :-)

We are currently on the lookout for a name for our soon-to-come new cat. Somehow we'd like to leave the beaten path of "normal" cats names behind us and thought maybe there's a nice character name from a fantasy (or sci-fi?) novel. Maybe you guys have some neat suggestions? [Disclaimer: Lord...

    LOL-Recommendation: "Incompetence"

I'm currently reading "Incomeptence" by Red Dwarf Scribe Rob Grant. The book has nothing to do with Red Dwarf and is immensely funny. I get the weird looks wile riding the bus since I have to almost continuously laugh, snigger, crack up or plain laugh out loud.

Wooo-Hooo. New Robin Hobb Title announced

:D Sorry, sometimes even I need to behave like a "fanboy". June/July is the scheduled release Month for the new Robin Hobb Novel "Shaman's Crossing", first part of - again - a trilogy. This is NOT set in the world that was the basis for the Farseer, Liveship and Tawny Man trilogy.

Where do you go for "new authors"?

Hey, I wonder what you guys do (apart from browsing this forum) in order to "find new authors". I find it immensely difficult, locating "new" interesting writers by using the big online retailers help like Amazon + Barnes & Noble. Mostly because their "recommendations" are built on sales...

    Fencer's Trilogy: Maps needed...

You know how it is, every aspiring Fantasy-Author gives his readers some maps of his dreamt-up world with countries, cities and the general lie of the land to orient himself while immersing into his story. I have started reading the Fencer's Trilogy (Colours in the Steel being the first...

Books to movies: Which are optioned?

Can anyone recommend a good (meaning relatively comprehensive) site, that lists books to which movie rights have been picked up and maybe even how far in development the scripts are and who's involved? Off an on I stumble over a nearly-missed info like "...which has been picked up for a...

    Help wanted: The English Patient

For a quiz I need your help, people: What meaning does "English Patient" have in the Story (Book/Film) apart from the obvious (him being a patient of and being english)? There must be some (hidden/clever/whatever) other implied meaning. Anyone? Jan

Santo Cilauro, Tom Gleisner, Rob Sitch: Molvania (Jetlag Travel Guide)

Has anyone read the best (and only) "travel guide" to MOLVANIA? Sounds very neat indeed. Jan

    Advertising for books

I just had an animated debate with my girlfriend, concerning the advertising (or better lack thereof) for books in Germany. We just got back from our annual London-Trip (of course each brought back a mighty pile of books) and I really liked the many book-advertisements in the tube. Made me...

    Rant: What I hate

Just have ti get this off my chest. I really, positively HATE when reknowned (at least in their genre of writing) authors give away their name in order to help some sub-standard writers publish their copy-cat work in order to make themselves some more money. Don't know what I mean? How about...

    Best opening Scene/Sentence/Word?

I remember (at a fairly young age) getting hold of "When Eight Bells Toll" by Alistair MacLean. And of being absolutely mesmerized by the opening of the book. The first few sentences where the protagonist just made my day. Can you give more examples where the first couple of sentences...

    Recommendation for Military-/Techno-Thrillers wtd.

While perusing my bookshelves I found out once again, that I am badly in need of some good (and lasting) recommendations concerning the Technothriller/Military thriller genre. I LIKE (and own) - All Clancy Novels - All Larry Bond Novels (is he still writing???) - The likes of Michael...

    Hi from Hannover / Germany

There are unbelievably many forums on the topic of every aspect on DVDs/Movies. However it took me quite a while to find an active forum on every aspect "readable". Well, here I am, hoping for discussions, tips, recommendations and some good ol' fun reading and writing. If I have a main...

    Books on/in/about London?

Hi, as an absolute London-phile and preparing for my umpteenth trip into this lovely bustling city, I am once again hunting for books (novels/fiction, mind you) that deal with/in London so much, that they could fit in a shelf under "London Fiction". I recently acquired and read - "Tunnel...
