    yet another newbie!

Seems like there's a few people from the northwest. And here i was thinking i was the only one with net access up here, let alone who read books.

    Peter Kay

I liked phoenix nights more than his standup which, round these parts, has become lodged firmly up the backside of the audience who consider him 'darn to earth' and 'one ut lads'.

    Digital cameras - advice needed

www.steves-digicams.com and www.dpreview.com are good for finding reviews, though keep in mind that some models such as the canon ixus come under different names on american sites. The bigger canon powershot models are very good, and the canon ixus i owned took very good photos. Nikon also make...

PPL on Ebay make me laugh

eBay So 10yrs ago the internet was the big BIG thing set to revolutionize all our lives, and aside from a few dotcom companies going bust and a growing number of self indulgent blogs - nothing much has happened. Except for ebay that is. The concept is sheer genius. Combining the early...

    I, Robot

"Suggested by" oh dear. That means it's nothing like the books and they're just cashing in on the asimov name. Kinda in line with recent blockbusters that seek credibilty by being 'based' on classic historical legends when really they're just royalty free excuses for bigger armies to run at...

    Paulo Coelho

The Alchemist is a wonderful book, though i thought the fairytale style weakened it compared to Veronika Decides to Die.

    5 Favourite Books

This thread is gold for making book lists...so here's mine in no order: Memoirs of a Geisha Nausea Catcher in the Rye Confederacy of Dunces The Bell Jar No room for sci-fi or thrills it seems, which is a shame because the likes of Dune, Contact, Stranger in a Strange Land, Red Dragon...

    Need some good recommendations

I always find the final chapters of nausea incredibly inspirational. But i guess inspirational books could be Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer which documents the story of chris mccandless - an america kid who upon graduation donated all his savings to oxfam and hit the road. She's Come Undone by...

    Worst or most disappointing book?

White Teeth by Zadie Smith. In fact i didnt just find it disappointing, i stopped half way through and ripped it to shreds one night at work.

    Currently Reading

After the english patient, the hours and kowloon tong, i decided to go for a bit of simple horror with james herbert's the dark. I used to like his gruesome little books, but at 350 pages it was too long and too dull. If anyones read herbert, you'll know he devotes every other chapter to a...

26, and for the first time in my life i actually feel my age, and it feels good.

    Sleepers {contains spoilers}

I thought the movie lacked some emotional weight which was suprising given the cast, but also the transformation from good kids caught in a brutal system to gangland murderers wasnt convincing. It's been a long time since i read the book, but i remember it being quite harrowing. The film was...

    Semi-philosophic/insightful book suggestions

A book that's been on my list for years now is theos odyssey. Still not read it yet, but according to amazon it might be suitable. Sounds like it does for religion what sophies world did for philosophy. And i didnt enjoy solitaire half as much as sophies world - seemed a bit laboured.

nostalgia video, when the internet was something new

Sounds like you need a mac, or a nice laptop. Ever since i got my first laptop 5yrs ago i've never gone back to desktops. They seem so excessive. But desktops are getting sleeker as they try to get a foothold on domestic life. Pretty soon home entertainment will be based around a pc, tv's will...

    Margaret Atwood

I've never read anything by her, though i've just heard her on desert island discs so i think i'll give the handmaids tale a go. From what she said, it's a book that includes all kinds of injustices, but every one of them has existed by law in one country or another. Sounds rather fitting nowadays.

    Reading less

Yeah i tend to draw things out too much, but i'm not sure what would make things better. I doubt governments can help. Increasing the cost of university education (uk) will hardly encourage the poorer kids to overcome the shortcomings of their underfunded schools. And they've certainly not done...

    Reading less

People don't have to be stupid to be influenced by adverts, but i guess it helps. As for the nagging. I wouldnt know, i'm not a parent, but if my kid had his heart set on a pair of trainers as endorsed by his favourite football player as seen in his favourite football magazine that he buys...
