We had a book on our shelves a few years ago I had always been meaning to read but someone (can't remember who) borrowed it and it never returned :(
All I remember about the story is that there is a man who is able to give people a 'drug' (?) and they are transported (in their minds, not...
Yeh, it's Daniel Handler, Lemony Snicket is a kinda glorified pen-name as he is a narrator and character in the series. If you look up Daniel Handler on Amazon he has written quite a few other books :)
Alice
'The Crazy Book of Marriage'?
My mum used to have it, it had a white cover and old-fashioned Roald-Dahl like illustrations, can't remember the author
On every page there was a picture with a funny saying or sentence beneath it.
This was all I got from googling!
But there are quite a few of...
I'm a bit of a magpie to I tend to be drawn to 'pretty, shiny books' :D I'm also a a complete name nerd so if the character has a good name then I would pick it up, if I didn't like the name I probably couldn't get through the first chapter.
The title name doesn't really bother me

I am just bursting to suggest Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov but I that counts as a 'world-renowned' book, no?
'Lady Cottintons Pressed Fairy Book'
It is a small and short book and is really for children.
It is a diary which starts when she was 5 until her 20's I think (not a true story!) and...
I don't understand you
You don't know for sure which books you will like/dislike until you read them.
A book by a certain author may or may not appeal to you but the next book you pick up (by the same author) will have different characters/plot/mood so unless you go by friends...
I used to be interested in that sort of thing but never picked it up seriously, interesting stuff though, was going to suggest The Codebreakers as that's the only one I've heard of but Novella beat me to it
There was a tv drama on the other night with cryptology with Kate Winslet in I think...
Literature:
Hamlet
Romeo and Juliet
The Tempest
An Inspector Calls
Tale of Two Cities
Heroes by Robert Cormier
Poetry:
Seamus Heaney *loved this*
Gillian Clarke
Simon Armitage
Carol Ann Duffy
This was for my GCSE's, I actually *loved* it all (I think I was the only one lol)...
Meh. I agree completely. I don't believe any author who says a character came purely from their imagination :)
But what happens if after you have written the book, you tell your friend you have based a character on them and they don't like it?
I'm being picky here, I would only say it is a...
I know you wrote this ages ago but hey ... could you recommend some good sites to me? I seem to google for hours, subscribe or whatever to some site and get nothing out of it :(
I've always wanted a letter pal in Japan
Thanks :)

I love these books, I'm not sure if they are adult stuff but I think (as a mature-ish 17 year old) they are amazing!
I think they are set in the 1920's
There are going to be 13 books, I've read the first 11 (not including the unauthorised autobiography which you should read if you are...
I keep all my books and re-read them ... I sell them on Amazon if they are particularly crap though
I knew someone who burnt there old books on a bonfire prior to moving house , how dare they?!
Well for a start a friend would tell you in the first place ...
I wouldn't really mind but not many people get to see my good side so I'd probably be a villain :o ... oh well I like them best :D
I'd be angry if they tried to flatter me, make me more beautiful than I am or whatever
Alice
I read a book called 'Dr Franklins Island' once (I can't remember the authors name) about two girls who get shipwrecked (?) and end up on an island with someone who turns them into a bird and a fish :D
It sounds crazy but it was actually really good I thought
Alice
Eh, Lolita has been my favourite book since I was 15 (I sneaked it, my mum would not put up a reasonable arguement)
I remember searching for something similiar to Nabokov / Lolita and ended up getting one of Prousts' books which is a different context (no paedophilia or anything) but had a...
Yay! Lemony Snicket fan here :)
I think the series gets so much better after book 6, maybe? Because you start to understand all the little phrases and 'clues' etc
The thing I liked about the book was that he talks as an adult to the readers not patronizes them like most authors (so when...
I havent' met any authorrs yet but my dad used to be a taxi driver and managed to get a few signed for me with little comments, usually about my dads driving  These two I remember ...
Fay Weldon (Letters to Alice)
Sue Townsend (Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, aged 13 3/4)
Alice
Yeh I do that too ... I have a tendency to buy books that look nice, sound nice or that I have just heard of :)
I have:
Courtesans by Katie Hickman
Marie Antoinette by Antonia Fraser (it's so long!)
The Woman In Black by Susan Hill
The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien
And all of the Harry Potter...
