Hello.
I was just curious as to what everyone's favourite Christmas Ghost stories might be? That's not necessarily ghost-stories based at Christmas time (such as A Christmas Carol), but might also include short stories told around this time for those who might not normally enjoy such a genre...
So, I've found myself in a position the last week or so where I'm reading few a couple of heavy tomes in the field of IT (web development specifically).
I find that when I am reading these texts that I don't read as much fiction as I'd like. It's like I either feel guilty reading fictional...
Shall I compare thee to a Summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And Summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And oft' is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime...
Article is here. It's nothing we don't already know, but it's still fairly tragic (but unavoidable, really) and a fair amount of data compiled together in one place.
I honestly don't see any need to hold back the decline artificially.
Follow up piece on the BBC here.
Starburst magazine has a couple of videos of King confirming earlier stories, including posts on his official site's forums, that he has planned now a sequel to The Shining, entitled Dr Sleep.
That story (and videos) are here here.
I am a bit worried about the whole 'mind vampire' thing that...
I remember reading about these a while ago. They're a smaller format book, with the text/spine horizontally equal, so you hold it 'side-on' and turn the page from the bottom upward and over. It's an interesting evolution for the printed/dead-tree format book, and one that's evolved based on...
The following is a summarised review, for a full review check here.
The Cellar was the first in Richard Laymon’s Beast House series, which comprise this novel, The Beast House, The Midnight Tour and the novella Friday Night at the Beast House. It's also the first novel that Laymon ever got...
Interesting piece in The Guardian here today, regarding the death of books, and changing role of the author. Also covers lots of other media - photos/video/newspapers etc. One of the more multi-angled pieces I've read recently on this subject.
Interesting article in the Guardian here regarding the Kindle and ebooks, and their effect on the printed book.
Given a few of the threads cropping up on here I thought a few of us might get a kick from it.
Literally. I have gone to order a few books from Amazon, nothing special even, and I just couldn't buy the ebook variants for my Kindle, but had to buy hard copies.
Thoughts running through my head included:
1) What if I really like it, and want to lend it to someone.
2) There won't be a...
Just as the global macro-economic news threatens to plunge us into despair and/or severe boredom, we get an awesome image and news release from NASA pertaining to what may we be water on Mars.
Story at the BBC here.
Exciting stuff.
Interesting article on the BBC news website here about IE and the IQ of its users.
"The study gave web surfers an IQ test, then plotted their scores against the browser they used.
IE surfers were found to have an average IQ lower than people using Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Users of...
Interesting article in the Guardian here about over-population of the planet.
Scary point raised (amongst several) which is that we have 1 bil. more people on the planet than we did in Oct '99.
Enjoyable read here regarding Foyles bookshop successes and business expansion plans. At a time when book shops are closing en masse in the U.K. this small but noticeable move by Foyles is a good thing.
