I've been way out of it too. Sherlock Holmes and Star Trek are the only two that I have even seen in the past year (or more). Book reading has conquered all.

I have not watched many of these films, which is sad really, because I do love the movies!

The only one I am really pulling for is Christoph Waltz, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS - he is outstandingly talented!!!!

I'm surprised at the Best Picture nomination for The Blind Side. It received good enough reviews, but even some of the positive reviews hinted at its flaws.
As of now I'd like to see Inglourious Basterds or District 9 win for Best Picture.

The Weinstein's completely botched the release of The Road. They let it sit on the shelf for a year and then they didn't even give it a wide release.

Picture: Avatar
Actor: Bridges
Actress: Bullock
Director: Cameron

I've only seen Up, Avatar and District 9 though.

I'm puzzled about outstanding films that don't get wide releases (even though this might be tangential to the main topic). The Door in the Floor was another one of some year's ago.

Even so, The Academy has never been shy about nominating people for roles in movies that were released in very limited means, sometimes very underground movies. For instance, Richard Jenkins nominated for Best Actor in The Visitor a few years ago.

The Weinstein's don't have the pull that they used to have in hollywood since they're almost broke, and they don't have the money anymore to buy the oscar like they did with Shakespeare in Love.

Watched Crazy Heart and Invictus last night. Jeff Bridges was really good. Invictus was just ok. Not sure why Matt Damon or Morgan Freeman were nominated though. They weren't that good.

I have read where the Oscar folks do not like Weinstein...not sure if this is true or not.

Waltz won!!!!!!!!!! The only one I was pulling for.

Thank god The Hurt Locker won best picture. It would have been ridiculous if Avatar won that.

I agree Disenthral, tho' Avatar is a visually stunning fantaysy,it's an old story adequatly acted, but Theo Hurt Locker has the raw power of realism about it,which annexes Avatar's million dollar special effects.

Yay for Waltz, Bridges, Mo'Nique and The Hurt Locker. HL wasn't a masterpiece, but it was a very good film and no complaints from me.

How the hell did Sandra Bullock win Best Actress, though? Granted, I haven't seen Blind Side, but Sandra Bullock over Streep and Mirren, and over performances like Mulligan's and Sidibe's? Seriously?

Morning radio had a field day with this one.
