Dan Brown: The Da Vinci Code

Off topic: Is someone going to paint an authentic Last Supper? JC and his apostles sitting on the floor, in a circle, sharing one large flat bread and eating out of one large wooden bowl. And of course they would all have the short, thick, curly hair that middle eastern men have. Or would that have been too authentic?

Please excuse me. I have this reaction every time I see a depiction of The Last Supper. And who knows, it could have been The Last Lunch because it gets cold there at night so they would have eaten before the sun went down. :D

Go ahead and rock the boat! Jesus as other than a blue-eyed blonde? Next thing we'll hear is he didn't speak King James English either... (note to moderator: I promise to stop here! Really)

That rock throwing is an old tired story.
However, I am sure there are numerous books with it, any one of which could serve as the topic for a new thread, and then one could throw rocks to one's heart's content and actually be on topic in a different thread.
Think of that ! :)

Again, I'm sorry. It's a reaction I have to pics of The Last Supper. I don't need another thread. I'll stick to what I'm good at: DB bashing. :D

I'll continue to play Ghost at the Banquet.
I just counted up posts in the threads that had DaVinci Code or Dan Brown in the thread title, and came out to about 830 altogether, without using my fingers for accuracy. The search turned up maybe 100 threads altogether, with I would guess maybe 1-2 internal posts per thread in those other threads? So I would call it roughly 1000 posts total on the DaVinci Code/Dan Brown combination.
If they had occurred in one thread, that would be called a successful thread, I think. Or in any event a successful discussion here! Nothing to be ashamed of, and every knock on the book contributes further to the success of the discussion. /evil grin/
Sort of appropriate for a book that has sold, what, 40 million copies? That's a publishing success also.
Microphone over to you all. :D

well, recently, members of the Priory of Sion have publicaly expressed their objections concerning their image created by D. Brown's book:eek:
so yes this is a successful debate not only here and I think everytime someone attacks the book's subject/story sales will increase...the only winner is the writer/publisher of the da vinci code

Never_know,
Indeed, who knows what next? Maybe guided tours with tour guides saying "This is the exact spot where..."
This could be BIG! :D
A new board game? If it hasn't been done already.
Any day now one will actually have to call it a "phenomenon"
Egad!
Peder

There are several board games. There are travel logs, travel books, comedic spoofs, readers guides and bookmarks. That's just at the store I work at. Who knows what else is actually available.

Ions,
Many thanks for that! One hardly knows what to say. Except that it shows yet again what I have long suspected -- that I am not the sharpest knife in the toolbox. :D
One can only stand in awe. :)
Peder

Honestly! These DVC threads are like magnets! I want to stop reading, but I just can't help myself. :D
Board Games? Comedic spoofs I can well understand, oh, you mean something besides the book itself.....ahhhh..... Well, the more the merrier.

There is no Priory of Sion, unless some crappy goth band has formed and they are the ones worried about their image.

There are plenty of tours "along the trail of the da Vinci Code" already. Apparently, the priest at St Sulpice is growing VERY tired of being called a liar when he tells the thousands of tourists wanting to see the spot where Silas murdered the nun that it's impossible for a man to even lift one of the candelabras supposedly used for the crime, or that the church was NOT built on top of a temple to Isis, etc etc etc.

Nevertheless, since the book's publication, the number of visitors has grown by 100,000 to 700,000 annually.

never_know is thinking of Opus Dei.

I can't believe I just posted on a Dan Brown thread. I'm still yet to pick up one of his books, and this is the first DB thread I've even looked at. I just wanted to find out why on earth Peder was posting on one!

Gotta watch out for that guy, Kook! :D
Actually, the whole phenomenon of the book and all the discussions and the hullabaloo are just fascinting to me and I can't stay away. It's like nothing that has been seen since Lolita, which fortunately I can remember first-hand. And that was a sensation that can't be described either.
BTW Love your penguin.
Real sharp with the hat! :)

The soundtrack to the movie arrived at the store today. More merchandise. I guess the DVD will arrive in time for Christmas. Deluxe edition and regular of course.

Personally I'd like to see a Saturday Night Live Skit done on TDVC. I'm sure they could really do it up. Perhaps after the film's release on the 19th they'll do one. :D Hmmm... Will Ferrell (yes I know he's retired from the show) wouldn't he make an excellent Langdon?

(and remember I liked this book)

I find it hard to believe that with millions of people talking about The Da Vinci Code themes, there are still some who insist the book doesn't have any, but as a public service to those who don't want to be one of the few people on the planet who don't know what the themes are:

“Dan Brown's story contains the big themes of Gnosticism, anti-Catholicism, the new age doctrine of returning to the sacred feminine, sex and fiction as history.
http://www.torontosun.com/News/Columnists/Rosica_Father_Thomas/2006/05/20/1590378.html

“The author of The Da Vinci Code "lifted the central theme" of the bestselling novel from a non-fiction book about Jesus and the Catholic Church, the high court was told today.”
http://books.guardian.co.uk/danbrown/story/0,,1719147,00.html

What has attracted readers to "The Da Vinci Code" is its central theme,
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/04/27/60minutes/main1552009.shtml

“Yet it was Brown’s novel The Da Vinci Code (2003), a book that combines all three of these themes, that catapulted Brown to celebrity.”

http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/davincicode/context.html

“The theme of The Da Vinci Code is so sensitive that readers come down hard on either side,”
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1402718373/102-8623645-0706555?v=glance&n=283155

Yet as a high-energy thriller filled with likeable protagonists, fascinating settings, intriguing secret societies and a powerful feminist religious theme,

“Subsequently the authors have produced a number of other books related to The Da Vinci Code and its themes.”
http://www.catholic.com/library/cracking_da_vinci_code.asp

“Four intertwined themes run through The Da Vinci Code:”
http://www.enotes.com/da-vinci/71806

“Brown has reworked themes from his own earlier Robert Langdon novel, Angels and Demons.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Da_Vinci_Code

“Most of the theological issues raised in the book can be divided into four themes:”
http://www.opusdei.org/art.php?w=32&p=7358

“Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work.”
